Wariner over Merrit at Golden Gala, Felix wins 400 meters! Isinbayeva Sets WR!

While Allyson Felix did not make the 100 meter team, her convincing win at 200 meters should open some coaches' eyes on the relay team decisions. Her win in Rome at the 400 distance should open some eyes.

The race of the night was the Wariner vs . Merritt affair. Wariner won this round! On the world record front, Yelena Isinbayeva, our fourth poster for adidas athlete, broke the world record and moved it to 5.03m !

EME NEWS (JULY 11, 2008) UPDATE

Isinbayeva world record 503, Jelimo and Vlasic remaining

ROMA (ITA, July 11): Rome Golden Gala (started in 1980) had an nice edition with world record in pole vault by Yelena Isinbayeva (the 9th ever at the event), one meet record and determining two out of five remaining for Jackpot hunt. In the clash of the evening Jeremy Wariner beat by 0.01 LaShawn Merritt at 400 m.

World Record

It was at 23.15 when all events long ago finished. But that is usual for pole vaulters. Russian pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva started the outdoor season with nice clearance at 470 followed by same one at 485 in first try what was European lead. But then she went over 495 in second and that was not only new meet record by also a new world lead. But that was not all. After first really good jump at 503 she in second went over the height and showed she is probably in her best shape ever. That makes hopes that more is to come from her. She is planning Stockholm, London and Monte Carlo as the meetings before Olympics. Let´s see whether at one of this events she will be able to meet with US record holder Jenn Stuczynski (492). It was her 22nd world record of the career, first outdoors since 2005.

AF Golden League jackpot race: Two are remaining

The Jackpot race is down to two. Pamela Jelimo continued in winning ways and clearly dominated the 800 m in the only meet record of the evening 1:55.69. It looks like only Yelena Soboleva who prefers competing at home could be a threat for her currently. The same dominance was displayed by Croatian Blanka Vlasic with two metres in High Jump (her 32nd win in a row). She missed the 205 (meet record height) three times at the place where the current world record was broken back in 1987. US Trials winner Bershawn Jackson lost by 0.11 to world champion Kerron Clement (48.23-48.34). Batman made a mistake in the first part of the race, had his usual strong finish but not enough for Clement. The other two lost clearly. Josephine Oniya was only 6th at 100 m Hurdles (12.85) with Jamaican champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton dominating (12.60). World champion is healthy. Irving Saladino with his only valid throw achieved in long jump 830 and won, jackpot contender Hussein Taher Al-Sabee was third (808).

Other action: Wariner gets 1:2 with Merritt

In the clash of the evening Jeremy Wariner with better timing in this race beat for first time this year LaShawn Merritt at 400 m after two losses in Berlin and at US Trials by 0.01 (44.36-44.37).
World record holder Dayron Robles did not had any problems at 110mH with 13.08, the same went for Allyson Felix at 400 m (50.25). US Trials winner here Sanya Richards preffered the 200 m and was second (22.49), beaten by Jamaican Kerron Stewart (22.34), third Muriel Hurtis-Houairi (22.50) of France and national record for Bahrain Rakia Al-Gasara 22.65 as fourth. In close 100 m final without injured Asafa Powell after false starts European Champion Francis Obikwelu got a nice win with 10.04 ahead of Derrick Atkins the same 10.04 and Jamaican Nesta Carter 10.05 PB.

World champion Brimin Kipruto beat Olympic winner Ezekiel Kemboi in steeple (8:15.71 for the winner), at 5000 m Sileshi Sihine gave the win to Ethiopia (13:04.94) ahead of Eliud Kipchoge and Tariku Bekele. World CC Junior Champion from last year Asbel Kiprop of Kenya won the 1500 m in PB 3:31.64 (fifth all-time junior) and closely missed the world lead of Augustine Choge 3:31:57. French Mehdi Baala as fourth new European lead 3:32.00.

World record holder Tirunesh Dibaba had an easy 5000 m win (14:36.58) over her domestic rival Meselech Melkamu (14:38.78).

World champion Tero Pitkamaki won the javelin with his season best 87.70 and was letting bad memories from last year to be forgotten. The struggle of 400 m Hurdles women as top athletes are not competing continued. Jamaican champion Melaine Walker got a nice win with 54.35 over world bronze holder Anna Jesien of Poland and US Trials winner Tiffany Ross Williams. Morrocan Amine Laalou won the 800 m with nice finish (1:44.27) ahead of Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (1:44:61) and Kamel Yussuf Saad (1:44:68).

Blade runner Oscar Pistorius came closer to possible relay Olympic participation with season best 46.62 as 7th in the 400 m B-race (winner Ricardo Chambers of Jamaica good 44.96). His next race is in Luzern on July 16

Friedrich again two metres

BUHL (GER, July 11): German Ariane Friedrich jumped for fith time this outdoor season two metres at 12th special High Jump meeting in Buhl. Second Russian Viktoriya Klyugina was also good with 198 PB and could try to qualify for Olympic Games with that at Russian Nationals next week. Men´s high jump winner was Italian Filipo Campioli with 224 ahead of Slovak Peter Horak (220), German Martin Gunther (220) and African champion Kabelo Kgosiemang (220).

Kaki wins expected gold at 800 m

BYDGOSZCZ (POL, July 11): Host Poland celebrated the first gold medal on Friday evening at the World Junior championships: Robert Szpak threw his javelin six times over the 70,00m-mark and won the gold medal with 78,01m. Egypt's silver medallist Ihab al Sayed Abdelrahman achieved a new national record with 76,20m, Ansis Bruns from Lithuania came third with 75,31m. Quite a surprise in the 200m final was Christophe Lemaitre from France who crossed the finish line as first in 20,83s just a tiny bit ahead of Jamaica's Nickel Ashmeade (20,84s). German Robert Hering was overwhelmed by his third rank with 20,96s. The 200m girls' final was dominated by the Carribean runners: Sheniqua Ferguson from the Bahamas clocked 23,24s and got the gold medal in front of Meritzer Williams from St. Kitts & Nevis; 23,40s) and Janelle Redhead from Grenada (23,52s). 16-year-old German Carolin Schaefer lead in the heptathlon competiton with 3.536 points - 76 points ahead of Yana Maksimava from Belarus and Natalya Gizbullina from Russia (3.388 points) as third. The 400m hurdles final was won by Takecia Jameson from the USA in 56,29s in front of Janeil Bellille who achieved a new national record in 56,84s for Trinidad & Tobago. Meghan Beesley from Great Britain got the bronze medal with 57,08s. Double for America in the boys' 400m hurdles final: Jeshua Anderson (48,68s) and Johnny Dutch (49,25s) were the lucky ones and left only the bronze medal for Amaurys R. Valle who ran a new Cuban national junior record of 49,56s. Another double in the girls' pole vault, this time for Russia: Valeriya Volik and Ekaterina Kolesova (4,40m) beat Ekaterini Stefanidi (4,25m). French Teddy Tamgho jumped three times over 17,00m and dominated the triple jump. His winning result was wind-aided 17,33m. Silver medallist Osniel Hernandez from Cuba managed 16,90m and bronze medallist Mohamed Yusuf Salman from Bahrain achieved 16,59m. The big favorite in the 800m final, Sudan's Abubaker Kaki Khamis did not deceive and crossed the finish line as first after 1:45,60min. Kenyan Geoffrey Kibet's attack on the last 100m was not successfull, so he arrived second after 1:46,23min. Andre Oliver from South Africa clocked 1:47,57min and came third. In the girls' 800m final Merve Aydin from Turkey was not as lucky as Kaki: She led most of the race but was overtaken on the last meters by Elena Mirela Lavric from Roumania (2:00,06min). Aydin clocked 2:00.92 (but is faster this year with her senior record 2:00.33) in front of Anna Mulder from the Netherlands (2:02,05min). Alina Talei from Belarus was the fastest hurdler in the 100m hurdles semifinals with 13,31s.

Solid steeple in Spain

BARAKALDO (ESP, July 12): Kenyan Abraham Chirchir won the steeple at 23rd international meet here with 8:23.95 beating home star Jose Luis Blanco who clocked 8:26.29. Another Kenyan wins by Joseph Kiptum at 5000 m (13:30.14) and Peter Bomo at 1500 m (3:39.64).

Doping news

ATHENS/BEIJING (GRE/CHN): Two latest doping cases. In Greece the 400 m runner Dimitris Regas was positive at trenbonol, he was 2005 European Junior bronze medalist. In China the female walker and 20 000 m track world junior record holder Song Hongjuan (24) was banned for four years. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been informed by the Athletic Association of the Peoples Republic of China (CAA) that she has been found guilty for EPO at an out of competition test on February 24 in Beijing. Her ban goes until March 25, 2012. Her road best is 1:26:46 from 2004. Per updated anti-doping rules there is a possibility to increase the ban for four years.

Washington ending his career

LOS ANGELES (USA): US quarter-miler Tyree Washington announced end of his career. He did so after US Olympic Trials. In 2003 he finished second at World Championships in the 400 m finals, but after dq of Jerome Young he can now feel as world champion.

Merritt 200 m in Rethymno

RETHYMNO (GRE): Another top name for European Athletics Premium meet Vardinoyannia on Monday is the US Olympic Trials winner LaShawn Meritt. The US star will not run his event the 400 m, but the 200 m at the Island of Crete.
