The Meeting de Paris, to be held on 30 June 2018, is the beginning of the second half of the 2018 Diamond League. Justin Lagat, our long time Kenyan correspondent, wrote this piece on the Kenyan athletes who will attend the meet held at the Stade de Charlety.

The top two finishers from Kenyan national trials to toe the line at the IAAF Paris Diamond League

If the IAAF Paris Diamond League event organizers did not use the results from the Kenyan national trials to invite runners for their middle-distance events, then anyone who thinks so should be forgiven. It seems too coincidental that the top two finishers from the trials that were done this past weekend in Kasarani Stadium to select the Kenyan team to the African Senior Athletics championships for August in Nigeria are all in the start lists of the women 800m, men 800m, men 1500m and women 3000m steeplechase events.

Emily Cherotich who won the women's 800m at the Kenyan trials will be joined by Eunice Sum and Margaret Nyairera who had taken 2nd and 3rd positions in trying to break Caster Semenya's winning streak in the event. Francine Niyonsaba, Ajee Wilson and Sifan Hassan will be the other big stars to watch here as well.

In the men's 1500m, Timothy Cheruiyot, the other new national champion from the Kenyan trials, will be leading Elijah Manangoi and Charles Simotwo (second at the Kenyan trials) in one exciting race of the evening that will include the world indoor champion from Ethiopia, Tafere Samuel and Abdelaati Iguider, among others.

Hyvin Kiyeng did not feature at the Kenyan trials in the women 3000m steeplechase, but will be leading Beatrice Chepkoech and Cellliphine Chespol who finished 1st and 2nd in the trials. With the absence of Emma Coburn in this race, it promises to be a battle among the Kenyans, including Norah Jeruto. Not unless Aisha Praught of Jamaica chooses to surprise again like she did in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Jonathan Kitilit and Ferguson Rotich, 1st and 2nd at the Kenyan trials will meet here again in the men's non-diamond league 800m race. Could Rotich capitalize on his great finishing speed to upset Kitilit? Other big stars to watch out for here include Bosse Pierre-Ambrose and Kipyegon Bett.
