Lavillenie 6.06m and tried at 6.20m

This has been an amazing season with Renaud Lavillenie. Since Jan 2021, Renaud Lavillenie has been jumping big. His 6.06m on Feb 27, was the best jump by Renaud Lavillenie since 2014 and Doneytsk, where Lavillenie set the then world indoor record. Just the week prior to the 2021 European Indoors, and Mondo Duplantis having gone 6.10m, this could mean a brilliant pole vault battle in Torun, Poland.

This is piece about the challenges as a head coach has some actually humor as well. Thanks, Stuart Weir.

The ATC did it this weekend. A 5k, an HM and a marathon completed under COVID-19 rules. The ATC, the second largest running club in the U.S.A. has been wanting to hold an event in Atlanta, but how to do it with COVID-19 standards?

David Monti did this piece and Jane Monti did the photos. We thank Race Results Weekly, and use this piece with permission.

This was the weekend last year that the ATC hosted the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials. The course was honest, the celebration complete and the level of competition was exciting. One year later, ATC is hosting the Atlanta Marathon Weekend.

I ran my first long run in the fall of 1972. It was about six miles. By my senior year of high school (1976), I had run 15 miles at one time. Sundays were designated long run days in 1976, when I embraced Arthur Lydiard, the eccentric and anectodal coach who put New Zealand running on the Olympic map. Long runs are about building strength, helping with recovery, and clearing the mind. Enjoy it!

Galen Rupp won the men's race, as he had in 2016. Galen was the most relaxed that I have seen him in a long time. He was open, he was

thoughtful, but most importantly, he has communicated his desire to compete in the next Olympics. With a bronze, and silver, is his next Olympic medal a color

suggesting gold? We shall just have to wait and see?

Galen Rupp is the #Socialingthedistance guest this week.

Galen Rupp was a quite good athlete at Central Catholic in Portland, Oregon. I saw him win the

Nike Border Clash. The first time I saw Galen race was when he was a junior and running the

AAU Junior 5000m, where he took second. David Frank, the Central Catholic coach, had called

me at home and said I needed to meet him at SJCC to see this guy who is "the real thing".

IMG_0209.jpg

Galen Rupp, photo by Mike Deering / The Shoe Addicts

I like Galen Rupp, but did not interview him until the Nike Border Clash that next Fall.

I have seen Galen Rupp in his Olympic events (2008, 2012, 2016) and WC (2007, 2009, 2011,

2013, 2015).

My thoughts: Galen Rupp is one of the finest American and global distance runners in modern

athletics. His ability to battle at 1 mile to 10,000m in the past, and the marathon now should not

be underrated.

Galen Rupp has a well developed sense of humor and a student o the sport. The guy is at his best

when he is in battle in the ends of races.

Colin Jackson's congrats

Colin Jackson went 7.30 in the 60m hurdles way back in 1994. It is now 27 years and I can recall only a handul of athletes who could challenge Colin's mark. Grant Holloway was different, he has the tools, and last night, went 7.32, then 7.29, and made athletics fans smile about Grant and know that Colin was and is, someone special.

Colin showed class. One would expect nothing else.

What an amazing day! In announcing his presence, Grant Holloway showed the world that he is a very special talent. The 7.32 in the heat was just behind the 7.30 by Colin Jackson in 1994.

Then, just a hour later, Grant Holloway distanced himself from the field, and took the world indoor record from Colin Jackson, and put his imprimatur on the 60m hurdles. His run was flawless, and his enthusiasm was for all to see!

The following was from World Athletics, celebating @flaamingo_, aka Grant Holloway.

I coached with Joe Mangan at Foothill Community College in 1990-1996. I have to admit, it was a wonderful time. Joe had the secret sauce to get our athletes into shape in about 4-6 weeks. It was all about the hills. We had the kids do hills most days. A long hilly run on Sundays. A good trail run or two. Some hill repeats. And racing. Each week, we got a little better. Joe has this ability to read an athlete and see a way to get them to buy into it.

Hills make you a better runner.

Become one with the hills.

This is David Hunter's second feature in this month. He has focused on Sand Morris, the American pole vaulter. A multi-faceted athlete, Sandi and David spoke about the pole vault, her plans and her goals. We think that you will enjoy this one, as you have with David's other columns.

The meeting in Madid will be remembered as the meet where Grant Holloway (aka @flaamingo_) set a new world record in the 60m hurdles, with his 7.29, breaking the iconic 7.32 set by Colin Jackson, way back in 1994.

Justin Lagat acknowledges the amazing 60m hurdles, but also wants us to know about the middle distance events.

The complete results on Villa de Madrid Gallur are below. The meet had a world indoor record at the 60m hurdles by Grant Holloway with his 7.29. Some quick distance events added to the final meet in the 2021 World Indoor Tour.

The 1964 Olympic gold medalist, at 10,000m, Billy Mills, loved cross country. Billy build his strength and speed in cross country, and his speed was enhanced by his strength. Prior to the 1964 final, Billy Mills had only completed three 10,000m events. His PB in the 10,000m Olympic final, Billy Mills scored a huge PB!

IMG_2895.jpgGrant Holloway, ATL Meet 1, photo via ESPN by Kathy Camara

In Lieven, Grant Holloway was on, and he was near perfection. His hurdling was sublime. His sprinting was fast and furious. In coming oh so close to the time that Colin Jackson achieved three decades ago, Grant Holloway is just hinting at the ability that he has in the 60m hurdles and 110m hurdles. Hint some more, oh @Flaamingoo!

Lynn Jennings was one of, if not the finest women's U.S. cross county runner in the modern era. Lynn once said, "Become one with the mud." She was absolutely fearless. Like Doris Brown Heritage, Lynn Jenning built a reputation on being a tough athlete who loved challenges. And both loved hills. So, be fearless. Become one with the mud and hills.

Last Saturday, Olli won the 1,500m in 3:32.35, setting an Australian indoor record, and making the Aussie Olympic qualifying standards. Issue is this: Athletics Australia is an absolute clusterf#ck. This is nothing new. Athletics Australia has damaged its own athletes chances at competing over the years. They just do not get it. They are there to help the athletes, yet, they do not seem to comprehend.

Perhaps they can come to their senses. We can only hope. Olli Hoare is a wildly talented athlete and he has the ability to race, and compete.

We hope Athletics Australia can see this...stay tuned.

Blanka Vlasic, the iconic high jumper, has announced her retirement. In her many years competing, her love of competition, her absolute joy in competing, her joy in clearing heights made her hugely popular with the audiences. In 2014, at the Areva Meeting de Paris, Blanka gave the media a most revealing interview: https://www.runblogrun.com/2014/07/your-adidas-moment-7-july-2014-audio-blanka-vlasic-interview-pre-meeting-areva-with-larry-eder-runblogrun.html .

The Copernicus Cup is an exciting meet. When I went in 2019, the LOC had enlisted local Polish athletes plus global stars to

The crowd was loud, not as loud as 2020 with Mondo Duplantis, but loud none the less! Should be a super

event in 2021! Can't wait to go back, sad that I am missing the 2021 Euro Indoor Champs, which I dearly love.

On Feb 13, 2021. Olli Hoare put it all together, winning the 1,500m in 3:32.35, a new Aussie indoor mile record.

This is the inteview that we did with Ollie in October 2020. Ollie said then that Dathan was getting him into shape.

And that he did!

Oliver (Olli) Hoare is an Australian professional runner and part of the On Athletics Club, coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. From competitive swimming to running, Olli's athleticism led him to a spot on the University of Wisconsin track & field team.

He was the 1500m NCAA Champion in 2018 and an 8 time All-American, and 9 time Big Ten Champion over cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.

We enjoyed inteviewing Olli. We also like his Badger connection. He was enthusiastic about his new club On Athletic Club. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing him compete in 2021.

That the 2021 NB Indoor GP was something of a miracle in itself-watch to see that stoy this week! Now, enjoy the amazing middle and long distance events on Staten Island as seen by David Monti, editor of Race Results Weekly.

The 2021 NB Indoor GP was held on Staten Island at the Ocean Breeze AC. Eight world leads and nine meet records were set on the new MONDO 200m hydraulic track.

IMG_4202.jpgSydney McLaughlin and Keni Harrison, photo by Kathy Camara

My favorite events?

1. The women's 400m-Shaunae Miller Uibo went 50.21, quickest 400m in 14 years.

2. The men's 1,500m had PBs in top six places, with Olie Hoare setting a new Aussie record at 3:32.35!

3. The men's 400m pitted Mike Norman and Rai Benjamin, who battled the whole way, 45.35 to 45.39 PB, with Norman getting the nod.

4. The men's 800m showed Donavan Brazier pushing himself down the last 150m, setting a national record at 800m in 1:44.21.

5. Bryce Hoppel went 2:16.27, a new national record, pushing himself.

6. An amazing women's 2 mile, with Elle Purrier setting national record, 9:10.28, with Emma Coburn, 9:15.71 PB.

7. Kayla White won the 60m in 7.15 PB, with Hannah Cunnlife, 7.17 SB and Candice Hill, 7.19.

8. A big 60m win by Trayvon Brommel in 6.50!

9. The 60m hurdles showed Keni Harrison in amazing shape, opening at 7.84 WL.

The speed that Shaunae Miller Uibo displayed in the 400 meters was just part of what I saw. It was the mastery that Shaunae had in the two laps, it was the execution that she did so well, and the suggestion that we have seen the finest women 400 m racer in history: Shaunae Miller Uibo.

Donavan Brazier is the 2019 World Championship gold medalist at 800m. He is coached by Pete Julian. Proud of his Michigan heritage, Donavan became a pro athlete after one year at University. Now, almost three years into being an elite athlete, Donavan is learning not only about pacing in races, but more importantly, about pacing in training and in life.

On Saturday, Feb 13, Donavan Brazier will be racing the 800m. It is his first race of the year, as he had to withdraw from the 600m at ATL #2, due to an athlete getting coronavirus, and while Donavan did not test positive, he had to quarantine five days.

How will he do tomorrow?

Updated 2/12/21

Original pos 1/21/21

Not sure that much has changed since I wrote this 3 weeks ago.

The Olympics is a close to a global religion that we actually have.

Sports transcends the activity and it gives many something to cheer about. And the seven billion people on this planet, having dealt with the pandemic in 2020, would sure like to see an Olympics in 2021. The sad thing is, with current medical knowledge and innoculations, it may be impossible to hold the Olympics without a huge loss of life.

Tokyo Olympic Stadium .jpgTokyo Olympic stadium photo by World Athletics

The issue is this. Can Tokyo hold an Olympics, with COVID 19, and the challenges we currently have? The IOC is steadfast, with Thomas Bach saying 'it will happen'. So does Seb Coe, head of Wold Athletics, qualifying that it will 'happen in some form". Yet, up to 80 percent of the people in Japan have noted that they would like to see it cancelled in 2021.

The athletes want to compete, as they have been waiting almost a year now.

What does the IOC do?

This was an easy day. Easy days make sense as much as tough days.

The second meeting at the 2021 American Track League was night and day impovements over ATL meeting 1.

The TV began with a much more organized approach, helping the audience know what to expect. The TV coverage was well thought out, showing the thoughtful work of Adam Schmenk and his team, the USATF TV impressario.

The good news was the support that USATF brought to the meet.

The team on TV, with Paul Swangard, Lewis Johnson and Ato Bolden gave the meet a bold informed voice, and the quality on the TV was much higher than in week 1.

This is clip 2 with the new world record holder. I did ask Ryan to not set world record

Ryan Crouser kept it relaxed and was into speaking about the shot put. He is on!

Ryan Crouser will be over 23 meters indoors in 2021, I believe!

Thanks to Paul Doyle/ATL! Thanks Mike Deering /The Shoe Addicts on producing this video!
