W. Kiprop in Berlin
BERLIN (GER): Former world half marathon champion Wilson Kiprop will make his comeback from injury at the Berlin Half Marathon on Sunday. Kiprop was second in this race in 2012 in a PB of 59:15. “On Sunday I want to run a good race again; it is my aim to achieve a sub-60 minute time. I suffered of a calf injury in 2014 and could not compete, but now it is all fine,” he said. Team-mate Richard Mengich, who clocked 59:59 in this race last year, will be his main rival. Arne Gabius will also be looking for a good performance in the build-up to the London Marathon with the aim of running inside 61 minutes. “It is my goal to clearly improve this time. I want to run sub 61 minutes and I will go with the first group. But I am not sure if I will be able to get near to the German record,” cautioned Gabius. Having already achieved the Olympic qualifying standard for the marathon, Philipp Pflieger, Julian Flügel and Gabius could all make a major step towards Rio on Sunday, if they run below a very moderate 66:30. This is the time asked by the German federation to confirm their form during the spring of the Olympic year. The favourite in the women’s race is Elizeba Cherono, who has a 70:10 PB and was second in this race last year. From Race News Service.
