Socialing The Distance with Larry Eder
Featuring Zach Panning & Kevin Hanson
I was thinking about the Coach /Athlete relationship as we move to the fall cross country and marathon season, and I stopped at Hansons/Brooks Original Distance Project. The brothers Hansons put their focus on building young American runners from modest college careers to elite marathoners and road runners.

In Budapest, Hungary, in the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Zach finished 12th in the perilously hot and humid World Champs Marathon, running a smart 2:11:21, less than two minutes off his PB. Note that the athletes who finished in front of him in Budapest had a differential of four plus minutes between their Budapest times and personal bests.

Zach Panning caught the imagination of many watching the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trial Marathon in Orlando. Zach held the lead, in hot and humid weather, until the last three miles when Clayton Young, Connor Mantz passed him. Zach was spent, and dropped to sixth, finishing in 2:10.50.

This is was a fun interview with Zach Panning and Kevin Hanson. I learned so much from them. I encourage all coaches to check it out!
