Day two was fantastic. With Mo Farah winning the 10,000 meters after a fall, and Nafissatu Thiam winning the heptathlon, as well as Christophe Harting winning the discus on his last throw! Here are some of the behind the scenes info on Day 2 from Alfons Juck, our friend at EME News!

OLYMPIC GAMES 2ND DAY

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“When I went down, I thought, ‘Oh my God, that is it.’ I just got up and wanted to stick with the guys and stay strong. It’s never easy but everyone knows what I can do. I thought about all my hard work and that it could all be gone in a minute. I wasn’t going to let it go. I got up quickly. I thought about my family. It made me emotional,” Mo Farah after 10 000 m win.

“Im not a PR man. I have bad experience with media from the past. I am enjoying the competition, the stage. I leave everything else for the others who want to say more,” Christoph Harting after discus win.

“That was a great competition. I honestly don’t feel like I lost. Of course I don’t think my hand hit the sand, but Greater is ahead,” Jarrion Lawson after long jump.

RESULT OF THE DAY
Nafi Thiam with personal bests on Saturday in long jump, javelin and 800 m scores World leading 6810 points. In total five PBˇs. Elaine Thompson in the 100 m final 10.71 in barely no wind +0.5. Mo Farah 55 last lap, 2:28 last km.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY
Christoph Harting winning the discus and also Nafi Thiam the heptathlon.
Top names out in the 100 m heats Eurochamp Martina, Bledman, Ogunode, Thompson and German record holder Reus. Hiwot Ayalew out in women steeple, another Ethiopian Etenesh Diro will be in the finals after her appeal. Also Ireland´s Sara Treacy and Jamaican Aisha Praught. Top casualty from triple qualification was former European champion Olha Saladuha from Ukraine.

USA 2-1-0, GBR 1-1-1, CHN 1-1-0, ETH 1-0-2, JAM 1-0-1, BEL 1-0-0.

POINTS (31 countries)
USA 41, GBR 27, ETH 26, GER and KEN 25, CHN 24.

Robert Harting threw 69.43 in his final throw to win gold

800 m: 1:44.70 Adam Kszczot fastest non-qualifier ever.

400 m: 44.65 Gil Roberts is fastest non-qualifier at Olympic Games.

100 m: Best ever 6th and 7th place in the 100 m race 10.92 and 10.94. SAFP third medal in a row in the same event.

10 000 m: Farah now same legend as Bekele, Gebrselassie, Viren, Zatopek and Nurmi winning twice 10k at the Olympic Games.

LJ: First US gold since 2004 (Dwight Phillips).

100 m: Bolt 10.07 faster than 1st round in Beijing or London.

OTHER RIO NEWS

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce beat Marie Josee Ta Lou by 0.007 for bronze. Their times 10.852 and 10.857.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Ivet Lalova did not run the 100 m semifinal due to slight muscle injury, she hopes to compete in the 200 m.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Russian long jumper Darya Klishina will not be able to compete at the Olympic Games after the IAAF revoked her special eligibility status in light of fresh evidence in relation to the McLaren report, informs agencies. Klishina has taken her claim to the CAS and insists she is a clean athlete. “I have proved that [I am clean] already many times and beyond any doubt. I am falling victim to those who created a system of manipulating our beautiful sport and is guilty of using it for political purposes. I will take every possible effort to protect my clean image,” she said.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Darya Klishina’s participation at the Olympics will be settled on Monday, informs TASS. “She was stripped of the exclusive admission on the basis of new information received last week. The athlete appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport which will satisfy or reject her appeal. The verdict on her case will be reached either on Sunday or on Monday. August 15 is the deadline for making a final decision regarding her participation in the Olympics,” said the IAAF.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Libania Grenot is determined to make the 400m final at the Olympics at the age of 33, informs La Gazzetta dello Sport. “After [missing] the finals of Beijing and London, I cannot fail a third time,” she said.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Javon Francis believes he will need to run a time in the low 44-range to progress through to the 400m final, informs Track Alerts. “I believe what can get me into the final is 44.1 or 44.2 so I am going to try my best and make it to the final. I think I am ready. I am in a great shape so I plan to just go out there and execute my race properly.” he said.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Christophe Lemaitre said reaching the semi-finals of the 100m was his goal, informs L’Equipe. “The semifinal was my goal and it would have been a big disappointment if I did not qualify,” he said. Lemaitre’s main focus is the 200m.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Former European 400m hurdles champion Kariem Hussein will compete in the Olympic Games despite a foot injury, informs Swiss Athletics. “The pain is there, I can not hide it. But I can accept it and still make my race. It is what it is, I have to deal with,” he said.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Christoph Harting was still confident he could claim the title despite entering the final round of the discus in fourth, informs Leichtathletik.de. “What did I think before the sixth attempt? This is my stage. This is my stadium. The victory won’t be taken away from me.” he said.

OTHER NEWS

BRUSSELS (BEL): Fabiana Murer and Paul Kipsiele Koech will both retire at the Brussels Diamond League on 9 September, informs sport.be.
