We’ve still got the relay to go- all the boys are really up for it. I always want as much gold as possible and the relay is always a great shot for us. BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Long jump was the last event for Czech biggest decathlon hope Tomas Järvinen. “I felt a pull in my backside after 60 meters in the 100, and it was immediately clear to me that it wasn’t quite right,” he admitted after his withdrawal. “I tried to fight in the long jump, but my muscle tingled in the penultimate step. My coach and I said that it was no use continuing; the injury could get worse,” explained Tomas, who is still awaiting an examination today and then a decision on what to do next.
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): “It’s so disappointing,” commented 100m reigning champion Marcell Jacobs after being injured and eliminated in the semis. I felt really good after the semifinal, but when I tried the starting blocks in the warm-up for the final, I felt a lot of discomfort in my adductor, probably the same problem I had a month ago. When I got on the blocks, I closed my eyes. I knew I might not make it all the way, but I was ready to break anything for this race. I came here as the European leader of the year, to confirm my performance. It’s part of the game; these are things you can’t control, and it will be another lesson. We’ll have to understand why it happened. I’m not one to give up; I’ll get back to work and keep going.
