BIRMINGHAM 2026 DAY 4

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It was quite chaotic to be very honest, even though I had quite a lead going into the last 1500m. I knew anything could happen in that 1500m, and I gave it my all to stay in touch and finish first. The toughest event was probably the pole vault, as you need to keep your nerves cool. That was so hard. Also, the 1500m wasn’t easy at all, I must admit. I am happy it was enough. In decathlon, the most important thing is fighting until the end – it was fun, but it was never easy. That last part of 1500m was insane; it was so hard, so grueling really. Especially in that last lap when it all hurts so much. That last 50 meters was horrific, the worst, as I felt like my legs were giving up on me,” decathlon winner Leo Neugebauer said.

RESULT OF THE DAY

Kristjan Čeh retained his men’s discus title, breaking the championships record twice with 70.83 in the first and 72.51 in the third series, plus two more throws over 70m. It’s the best discus result ever at a championships/games competition.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY

30-year-old Saliyya Guisse, who has only jumped 14m once before, leaped to 14.46w to win silver in the women’s triple jump. Marino Bloudek won silver in the 800 m, being the worst on the start list according to PB/SB.

BIRMINGHAM NEWS

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Max Burgin has withdrawn from the European 800m final just minutes before it starts due to injury in warm-up.

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): “I was feeling really great, but unfortunately something happened, and I was just on the ground,” said Audrey Werro about her fall in the 800m semifinal. “I hope I will qualify for the final. I finished the race, too, which was important to give myself a chance of qualifying.” Minutes after the race, a small “qR” appeared next to her name in the results, confirming her advance to Friday’s final. Lithuanian Gabija Galvydyte, who was also involved in the incident, was reinstated with her. “The decision was made by the Referee in accordance with Technical Rule 17.1.1, following an unintentional touch involving the SUI athlete [Werro] and the FRA athlete [Bourgoin],” says the official statement.

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): “Of course, I am satisfied with the victory and confirmation of my position as the favorite. I fulfilled my goal of becoming the European champion. Although I must honestly say that I am not completely satisfied with my performance or my run. I wanted to run for a personal record, but it was far from my maximum, and I also made a mistake on the ninth hurdle, going 16 steps. However, I have the gold and that is the most important thing from this race. I believe that I will be able to improve my time in the next races,” said Emma Zapletalová.
