European Athletics is at this exciting cross roads. Over the past few years, the EAA has established itself as one of the most focused area federations in all of sports. Part of that is that EAA has gotten ahead of the incessant media narrative of negatives in athletics. By focusing on projects that they can deliver (or over deliver), EAA is putting together some programs that make tremendous sense, from anti-doping to reviving a vibrant cross country championships, and revisitng all European records with a thoughtful and qualified examination board.

European Athletics confirmed on Friday 28 April that Paris will be the host city for the 2020 European Athletics Championships. This 26th edition will take place at Charléty Stadium from 26 to 30 August 2020.
Paris will host the European Athletics Championships 2020 thanks to an ambitious and ecological application. From the moment these championships opened to applicants, Paris put everything in place to propose an excellent application. The French Athletics Federation and the Paris 2020 committee made a number of outstanding presentations in front of the various stakeholders. Their application had an even greater impact due to the fact that it benefited from considerable support from the public authorities both in Paris and in France as a whole.
“I’m delighted that the European Athletics Council validated the Parisian project to host the European Athletics Championships 2020. It’s an ambitious yet realistic project, which will enable us to return our sport to centre stage again, shortly after the Olympic Games,” said European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.
André Giraud, President of the French Athletics Federation, said, “Hosting the European Championships in France is a great opportunity for us to unify our clubs and our members around a popular event, which is intended to convey our values: setting new targets, commitment and solidarity…”
Paris 2020, a neutral ecological footprint
“I’m sure that Paris is capable of organising some fantastic championships, on a par with those organised over recent years in Zurich and Amsterdam, as well as those which are being prepared for next year in Berlin”, said President Hansen.
Paris is ready to take up the gauntlet by organising a responsible championships. Indeed, through the Green Inspiration concept, the organisation team for Paris 2020 is keen to reduce the environmental impact of the competition. Firstly, by reducing the distances between the athletes’ village, the University campus and the competition site, Charléty Stadium. Between the two key venues, it’s just 5 minutes’ walk. They’ll also be proposing some special offers, which will encourage spectators to favour public transport.
Communication will not be outdone either as the digital and paperless formats will help to reduce the event’s carbon footprint, something to inspire new generations for the foreseeable future.
“I’m delighted to be supporting this event,” said Pierre Weiss, President of the organising committee, “as you’re supposed to be federative to promote athletics, and it also shows off France’s expertise in terms of the organisation of environmentally-friendly events.”
Athletics at Charléty, a great story
Despite the fact that France is one of the oldest European federations, the French public has had just one opportunity to support its athletes on home soil for the European Athletics Championships, back in 1938 at the Olympic Stadium in Colombes.
At this time, the championships were reserved for men, with 272 athletes from 23 different nations. Meantime, the women competed in a special championship in Vienna.
The stakes will be a lot higher in 2020, since nearly 1,500 athletes, from 51 member federations of the European Athletics will be expected to compete at Sébastien Charléty Stadium, to the south-east of Paris.
The stadium, which can accommodate 20,000 people, is a prime venue in the history of athletics as it hosted the Finals of the IAAF Grand Prix in 1994 and 2002. In 2017, the MEETING de PARIS (IAAF Diamond League) will also be held at the Charléty Stadium, on Saturday 1 July.
“Charléty Stadium offers a fantastic infrastructure for athletics and the Parisian public has a reputation for being enthusiastic. The stadium’s capacity is perfect for the European Athletics Championships and so it’s likely to attract a big crowd, particularly during the evening sessions,” said President Hansen. “These different factors, combined with its expertise in terms of the French Athletics Federation and local protagonists, as well as the presence of Europe’s top athletes, are a guarantee that these championships will remain etched in people’s minds”.
Paris accueillera les Championnats d’Europe d’Athlétisme 2020
European Athletics a officialisé ce vendredi 28 avril la nomination de Paris en tant que ville-hôte des Championnats d’Europe d’Athlétisme 2020. Cette 26ème édition se déroulera au Stade Charléty du 26 au 30 août 2020.
Paris accueillera donc les Championnats d’Europe d’athlétisme en 2020, grâce à une candidature ambitieuse et écologique. Dès les premiers jours de l’ouverture aux candidatures pour ces championnats, Paris a tout mis en Å“uvre pour faire valoir sa candidature. La Fédération française d’athlétisme et le comité Paris 2020 ont réalisé de remarquables présentations devant les différentes parties prenantes. La candidature a été d’autant plus impactante qu’elle a bénéficié du soutien considérable des pouvoirs publics parisiens et français.
“Je suis ravi que le conseil de European Athletics ait validé le projet parisien pour accueillir les Championnats d’Europe d’Athlétisme 2020. Un projet ambitieux et réaliste qui permettra de remettre notre sport sur le devant de la scène, peu après les Jeux olympiques,” a déclaré le Président de European Athletics, Svein Arne Hansen.

Paris 2020, une empreinte écologique neutre
“Je suis certain que Paris saura organiser de formidables championnats, à la hauteur de ceux organisés ces dernières années à Zurich et Amsterdam, ou encore de ceux qui se préparent l’année prochaine à Berlin,“ a souligné le Président Svein Arne Hansen.
Paris est prête à relever le défi, en organisant des championnats responsables. Avec le concept Green Inspiration, l’organisation de Paris 2020 souhaite réduire l’impact environnemental de la compétition. D’abord, en réduisant les distances entre le village des athlètes, à la Cité Universitaire, et le site de compétition, le Stade Charléty. Entre les deux, seulement 5 minutes à pied ! Mais également en proposant des offres spécifiques qui pousseront les spectateurs à privilégier les transports en commun.
La communication ne sera pas en reste. Le digital et les formats dématérialisés aideront à réduire l’empreinte carbone de cet événement.

L’athlétisme à Charléty, une belle histoire
Malgré que la France soit une des fédérations européennes les plus anciennes, le public français n’a eu qu’une seule occasion de soutenir ses athlètes sur son territoire pour des Championnats d’Europe d’athlétisme. C’était en 1938, au Stade Olympique de Colombes.
A cette époque, les championnats étaient réservés aux hommes, avec 272 athlètes de 23 nations différentes. Les femmes, quant à elles, participaient à un championnat spécifique à Vienne.
L’enjeu sera bien plus important, en 2020, puisque près de 1 500 athlètes, provenant des 51 Fédérations Membres de European Athletics, seront attendus au Stade Sébastien Charléty, au Sud Est de Paris.
Le stade, qui bénéficie d’une capacité d’accueil de 20 000 personnes, est un haut lieu de l’histoire de l’athlétisme, puisqu’il a accueilli les Finales du Grand Prix IAAF en 1994 et 2002. En 2017, le MEETING de PARIS (IAAF Diamond League) se déroulera également au Stade Charléty, le samedi 1er juillet.
