L. Cherono wins Amsterdam 2:05:09 PB, Nageeye 2:08:16 NR and EL
AMSTERDAM (NED, Oct 15): With splits of 62:51/62:18, Kenya’s Lawrence Cherono won the TCS Amsterdam Marathon in a lifetime best of 2:05:09, breaking Daniel Wanjiru’s course record by twelve seconds. The top five runners all broke the 2:06-barrier: Kenyans Norbert Kigen (2:05:13) and Abraham Kiptum (2:05:26) made it an all-Kenyan podium with Ethiopia’s Mule Wasihun (2:05:39) and Kenya’s Amos Kipruto (2:05:43) fourth and fifth respectively. The fastest entrant in the race Tesfaye Abera from Ethiopia finished eighth in 2:07:39 while Abdi Nageeye set a Dutch record and European lead 2017 of 2:08:16 to finish ninth. Notable non-finishers included former three-time winner Wilson Chebet from Kenya and debutant Zane Robertson from New Zealand. Ethiopia’s Tadelech Bekele won the women’s race in a lifetime best of 2:21:54(70:12/71:42) ahead of Kenya’s Gladys Chesire (2:24:51) and Ethiopia’s Azmera Abreha (2:25:23). Notable track runner Viola Kibiwott from Kenya was fourth in a 2:25:32 PB with former Boston Marathon winner Caroline Rotich fifth in 2:26:26.
