The World Indoor Championships are over, and they were four fine days and nights of athletics. There was also some frustration and curiosity over the number of protests, which affected the competition more than the races. What was obvious was that many athletes had little or no experience on running the indoor sport, which is a very different note. Many athletes, who had little experience, had issues with the high banking of the track. Athletes such as Pavel Maslak, who originally took the bronze, and after 2 DQs, was given the gold, has had little if any DQs in an indoor championship. Practice does make perfect.

On the other side, the number of DQs over lane violations suggest that, perhaps, the sport does need rules focused just on the indoor sport.

We may also need an Ombudsman, someone neutral, who can reach to the Jury and remind them, that there has to be a happy medium between officiating and protecting athletes and protecting athletes too much.

WORLD INDOORS DAY 4
QUOTES OF THE DAY
Renaud Lavillenie: “I was a little dissapointed to miss my first jump at 5.90m as I know I am able to get it. But to be able to secure one more gold medal in the world championships is a crazy feeling.”
Andy Pozzi: “To be a world champion in Birmingham makes the achievement tenfold. I’ve grown up here over the last decade. The first competition I ever watched was the trials here 15 years ago.”
Ivana Spanovic: “I still cannot believe it even though I was preparing myself for it. Last time I lost the world title in the final attempts so I just wanted to stay focused and waited until the very end. I have tried to win this title so many times and finally I managed to produce gold. Brittney Reese is a huge personality, she is a special athlete.”
Francine Niyonsaba: “I am always smiling when I wear this national flag of Burundi. I did all I was supposed to do to defend this title despite the fact it was not easy. I did it for god and for my country. I want to be an inspiration for the youth and children in Burundi.”
Yomif Kejelcha: “Next year I want to break the 5000m world record.”
