NAIROBI (KEN): The Kenyan athletics team for the Commonwealth Games has threatened to stop training until their allowances are paid, informs the Daily Nation. The athletes also want the government to provide training kit among other equipment. National Olympic Committee of Kenya president Paul Tergat said the allowances and the remaining kit would be settled by Wednesday this week but these issues still have not been resolved.
GLASGOW (GBR): Eilidh Doyle is looking forward to the Commonwealth Games next month after exceeding her expectations at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham with a bronze medal in the 400m flat, informs Athletics Weekly. “In order to be ready for the Commonwealth Games in April we planned a full indoor season, not really targeting the World Indoors, just thinking that if I was running well enough to make the team that would be great because it would give me some extra races,” she said. “Things have already gone better than expected and I have started the year with a medal. So that gives me confidence going forward, knowing that my flat speed is there.” Doyle will be looking for her third successive medal in the 400m hurdles in Gold Coast next month.
NICOSIA (CYP): Cyprus have confirmed a 47-member team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games as they mark their 10th participation at the multi-sport event. Athletics will have 17 names there with hurdles olympic finalist Milan Trajkovic the standout name.
ADELAIDE (AUS): Young Australian pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall has said he is being advised by former Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker, informs Eurosport. “We are often in contact mainly about technical stuff to do with my jumping and how to best approach things like that. He once told me that he regrets not spending more time on his run up throughout his career and continually drums into me about getting my penultimate step down as fast as I can to prepare me for a higher more explosive takeoff,” he said. Marschall finished fourth at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham earlier this month.
