Wimbley equals 400 m WL
DES MOINES (USA, Jun 23): On the penultimate day of the USATF Championships, DeAnna Price regained her US record in the hammer with a fifth round throw of 78.12m to move to fourth on the world all-time lists behind Anita Wlodarczyk (82.98m), Betty Heidler (79.42m) and Tatyana Beloborodova (78.80m). Gwen Berry, who set the US record of 77.78m in Chorzow earlier this month, was second with 72.99m. There was an upset in the shot put as Darrell Hill beat Olympic champion Ryan Crouser 21.57m to 20.99m, the latter only producing one valid throw in the competition. Other field event highlights included world champion Sam Kendricks clearing 5.85m to win the pole vault from Chris Nilsen (5.80m) and Vashti Cunningham clearing 1.95m in the high jump. On the track, Shakima Wimbley tied Shaunae Miller-Uibo’s world lead with 49.52 in the 400m ahead of Jessica Beard (50.08), Kendall Ellis (50.37) and world indoor champion Courtney Okolo (50.65) and Kahmari Montgomery, who was only seventh in the NCAA Championships, won the men’s 400m title in 44.58 from Paul Dedewo (44.64) and Mike Cherry (44.85). World record-holder Keni Harrison won the 100m hurdles title in 12.46 against a 1.4 m/s headwind from Christina Manning (12.65) and Sharika Nelvis (12.68) with Dawn Harper-Nelson fifth in her farewell year in 12.93. Kenny Selmon won the 400m hurdles title in 48.21 and Georgeanne Moline was the fastest in the women’s heats in 54.64. The World Championships order was repeated in the women’s 3000m steeplechase with Emma Coburn (9:17.70) and Courtney Frerichs (9:18.69) taking a one-two while Shelby Houlihan produced a 57.67 last lap to win the 1500m title in 4:05.48 from world silver medallist Jenny Simpson (4:06.21) and Kate Grace (4:07.04). Olympic champion Matt Centrowitz won the men’s 1500m title in 3:43.37 with a 53.59 last lap from Izaic Yorks (3:43.63) and Ameer Webb (20.39) and Jenna Prandini (22.48) were the fastest in the 200m heats.
