2018 London DL Diary: Sifan Hassan runs 3rd Fastest Ever Mile at Muller Anniversary Games (London DL)

The second day of the Muller Anniversary Games was full of some exciting performances. Here’s the event by event results from EME News, from Alfons Juck. The 800 meters for men was very deep, with Emmanuel Korir running 1:42.05. Luvo Manyango jumps four times over 8.50 meters: 8.50m, 8.51m, 8.53m and 8.58m.

Jennifer Prandini won the big 200 meters, Ce’Aira Brown not only won, set PB at the 800 meters. Sandra Perkovic showed who was discus star with her dominating throw. And finally, Sifan Hassan just clobbered the field with her butt kicking 4:14 mile!

Hassan 3rd fastest ever mile

LONDON (GBR, Jul 22): Second day of Muller Anniversary Games (IAAF DL) offered several highlights and in total 4 new and 1 equaled World lead 2018, also one Diamond League record and four meet records. Korir 1:42.05 and Hassan 4:14.71 were top marks, also from all-time lists point of view.

Event by event

Men

200m (non-DL) – NCAA 400m runner-up Akeem Bloomfield sped to a 19.81 PB, winning by two-tenths from Alonso Edward (20.01) and Alex Quinonez (20.13).

800m – Performance of the meeting from Kenya’s Emmanuel Korir who moved to sixth on the world all-time lists with 1:42.05 (fastest time since 2012 Olympics). Clayton Murphy was back to top form with 1:43.12 with Commonwealth champion Wycliffe Kinyamal given the same time in third for a PB. After winning in Monaco, Nijel Amos was fourth in a fast 1:43.29 with Brit Jake Wightman fifth in a 1:44.61 PB.

1500m (non-DL) – Olympic champion Matt Centrowitz won a tactical 1500m in 3:35.22 from Ryan Gregson (3:35.35) and world U20 bronze medallist Justus Soget (3:35.56). Henrik Ingebrigtsen came through late for fourth in 3:35.61.

110m hurdles (non-DL) – Ronald Levy set a season’s best of 13.13 to beat Americans Devon Allen (13.30) and Freddie Crittenden (13.33). World indoor champion Andrew Pozzi was fourth in 13.36.

Long jump – Luvo Manyonga had three jumps over 8.50m: 8.51m, 8.53m and 8.58m, all better than existing meet record. Teammate Ruswahl Samaai was second in 8.42m with Jarrion Lawson (8.25m), Henry Frayne (8.24m) and Olympic champion Jeff Henderson (8.20m) third, fourth and fifth respectively. Greg Rutherford could only jump 7.55m in his farewell and will not be going to the European Championships.

4×100 m (non-DL): Britain in top composition (Ujah, Hughes, Gemili, Mitchell-Blake) clocked World leading and meet record 37.61. Second Japan 38.09 and third Netherlands national record 38.21.

Women

200m – US one-two with Jenna Prandini and Gabrielle Thomas setting PBs of 22.16 and 22.19. Shericka Jackson was third in 22.22, edging out Dina Asher-Smith in 22.25. Jamile Samuel improved to 22.37 in sixth, finishing one place ahead of Dafne Schippers in 22.42.

400m (non-DL) – Jamaican one-two for Stephenie Ann McPherson (50.31) and Anastasia Le-Roy (50.85) ahead of world indoor champion Courtney Okolo (50.93). Lisanne de Witte was fourth in 51.08 as top European.

800m (non-DL) – Ce’Aira Brown eclipsed her PB with 1:58.57 to beat Jamaica’s Natoya Goule (1:58.67). Lynsey Sharp improved season best to 1:59.34 in third.

Mile – Sifan Hassan moved to third on the world all-time lists with a Diamond League record of 4:14.71 behind Genzebe Dibaba (4:14.30) and Svetlana Masterkova (4:12.56). Gudaf Tsegay finished second in 4:16.14 just ahead of Hellen Obiri who set a Kenyan record of 4:16.15. Jenny Simpson got ahead of Laura Muir for fourth on the last lap, 4:17.30 to 4:19.28. Linden Hall was 10th in an Oceanian record of 4:21.40.

100m hurdles – World record-holder Kendra Harrison beat Olympic champion Brianna McNeal, 12.36 WL to 12.47. McNeal did run a faster 12.41 in the heat.

High jump – Mariya Lasitskene cleared 2.04m on her first attempt to equal her world lead before three attempts at a Russian record of 2.08m. Italy’s Elena Vallortigara first improved from 1.96m to 2.00m before improving once again to 2.02m to come within one centimetre of the Italian outdoor record.

Discus – Sandra Perkovic’s only valid throw of 67.24m in the first round was enough to beat Cubans Yaime Perez (64.63m) and Denia Caballero (63.91m).

4×100 m (non-DL): Britain won in third fastest 2018 in Europe 42.36 (behind Germany and Switzerland in the lists). Second China got 42.59 and third Netherlands 42.71.
