DUSSELDORF (GER): Sonja Oberem, the 2000 European marathon bronze medallist, has been appointed managing director and race director of the METRO GROUP Marathon Düsseldorf. The 2:26 marathoner, who was also a European champion in triathlon, has previously been event manager at the Dusseldorf Triathlon. She replaces Jan Winschermann, who will stay on as a special consultant for the GOLAZO-run event. Bob Verbeeck, CEO of Golazo Group, says: “I’m very excited to have Sonja on board as the new Managing Director and Race Director. At Golazo, we have a tradition of hiring former elite athletes to run some of our events and to help spread our mission of getting more people moving.”
