Coleman beats Prescod by 0.001
BIRMINGHAM (GBR, Aug 18): Five meeting records highlighted the last meet of IAAF Diamond League 2018 before the finals. In the expected sprints Miller-Uibo beat Asher Smith by 0.16 and Christian Coleman was over Reece Prescod only by 0.001. From 15 present Berlin gold medalists in individual events only four were able to win (Muir, Mihambo, Hassan, Sprunger).
Event by event short review
Men
100m – Christian Coleman held off the fast-finishing Reece Prescod for the victory. Both athletes were timed at 9.94 (9.938 to 9.939 – but PB and British U23 record, wind -0.5) with the former getting the verdict. Noah Lyles (9.99) and Yohan Blake (9.99) also went sub-10.
400m – Fred Kerley (45.54) narrowly out-leaned European champion Matthew Hudson-Smith (45.59) and Paul Dedewo (45.62) with Christian Taylor, who led coming into the home straight, fourth in 45.78.
800m – Emmanuel Korir stormed to a 1:42.79 meet record clocking, leading a Kenyan 1-2-3-4 ahead of Jonathan Kitilit (1:43.53), Elijah Manangoi (1:44.15 PB) and Ferguson Rotich (1:44.44). Marcin Lewandowski finished just ahead of Adam Kszczot, 1:44.75 to 1:44.97.
Mile (non-DL) – Stewart McSweyn (3:54.60) and Ryan Gregson (3:55.10) took a surprise one-two for Australia at Emsley Carr Mile with Olympic 5000m silver medallist Paul Chelimo third in 3:55.96, his first sub-four minute clocking.
110m hurdles – Orlando Ortega moved to second on the 2018 world lists with 13.08 (+1.3) ahead of Ronald Levy (13.22) and European champion Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (13.27).
3000m steeplechase – Conseslus Kipruto cruised to victory in 8:14.33 ahead of Ethiopia’s Chala Beyo (8:14.61). Benjamin Kigen faded to fifth in 8:17.43 after twisting his ankle on the final water-jump.
Long jump (non-DL) – World champion Luvo Manyonga twice surpassed the meeting record: 8.53 (+1.5) in round four and 8.47 (-0.9) in round six.
High jump – Commonwealth champion Brandon Starc from Australia cleared a 2.33m PB before attempting 2.37m.
Javelin – Andreas Hofmann threw 89.82m in the second round to beat teammate Julian Weber who set a season’s best of 86.63m. European champion Thomas Rohler was only fourth albeit with 84.33m.
Women
200m – Shaunae Miller-Uibo continued her unbeaten streak with a 22.15 (+0.4) meeting record ahead of treble European champion Dina Asher-Smith (22.31) and Dafne Schippers (22.41).
1000m (non-DL) – Laura Muir missed Kelly Holmes’ British outdoor record but still triumphed in 2:33.92 meet record and European lead ahead of France’s Renelle Lamote (2:34.48).
1500m – Sifan Hassan won in 4:00.60 from Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay (4:01.03) and Poland’s Sofia Ennaoui (4:02.06).
3000m – Agnes Tirop clocked 8:32.21 with world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri only third in 8:36.26. Eilish McColgan was the top non-Kenyan in fourth in 8:38.49. European 10k champion Chemtai clocked national record for Israel 8:42.88 as 7th
100m hurdles (non-DL) – A German one-two for Pamela Dutkiewicz (12.84, -0.6) and Cindy Roleder (12.96).
400m hurdles – European champion Lea Sprunger held on to beat Jamaica’s Janieve Russell, 54.86 to 54.91.
Long jump – Fresh from winning the European title, Malaika Mihambo set a meeting record of 6.96 (+1.5) to beat Olympic triple jump champion Caterine Ibarguen (6.80, +0.1) and Shara Proctor (6.70, +0.5).
Pole vault – In windy conditions, Sandi Morris found 4.62m sufficient for victory over Ekaterini Stefanidi who could only clear her opening height of 4.52m.
Shot put – Christina Schwanitz got her revenge on European champion Paulina Guba, 18.20m to 17.92m.
