Cregg Weinmann has reviewed footwear and apparel for California Track & Running News since the mid 1990s, and for the RunningNetwork since 1998. If you would like to see this review on Running Product Reviews, please go to: Active 88 Boulder, $120. At RunBlogRun, our goal is help you find the perfect shoe for you. Our suggestions: always visit your local running stores at end of day, take a clean pair of running socks, and try on five to six different brands, and jog around in them. Real running stores allow you to check the right show for you. For more reviews, please go to www.runningproductreviews.com.

Active 88 is a company which has been involved in Endurance Sports for 30 years, so while new, is knowledgeable and well-connected. The Boulder (named for the city) is their first shoe and is a nice hybrid racer/lightweight trainer.

The upper is an open mini-mesh which breathes extremely well, anchored by fused overlays in the toe, has a securely supported lace throat, with elastic laces for quick entry. The heel is very minimal, with no structure, and the ankle collar is smooth with lightweight foam which conforms well to the foot. The midsole is a resilient formulation, which has a protectively bouncy feel to it, enhanced by an insole of the same material. The outersole is a lattice of rubber which is slightly thicker and solid at the lateral heel and across the toes, the remainder toughened foam, which rarely comes into contact with the ground. While not the lightest of racing shoes, it does have a generous amount of cushioning under foot, making it especially suited to longer races.

Testers: “Soft fit and feel that seems to disappear on the foot. Racing and faster running get plenty of protection.”

Sizes: Unisex 5-13 (Women 6-14.5)
Weight: 6.9 oz. (men’s size 11)
Shape: semi-curved
Fit: snug heel, roomy forefoot
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted
Range: efficient runners – up to a marathon, possibly beyond; heavy strikers, between 12K and 25K
