Our suggestions: always visit your local running stores at end of day, take a clean pair of running socks, and try on five to six different brands, and jog around in them. Real running stores allow you to check the right show for you. For more reviews, please go to www.runningproductreviews.com.

The 1400 has been one of New Balance’s most versatile racing products thanks to the straight forward approach of quality foam and a no-frills upper.

Taking the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ philosophy, round 6 of the 1400 has the expected characteristics of the series with some new touches thrown in for good measure. The upper is a closed mini mesh, with just enough fused overlays to support the foot effectively, also giving the shoe a good aesthetic appearance. The RevLite midsole has always been the magic of the 1400 and it’s lightly touched, with new compression molding, but the same familiar feel. The outersole is carbon rubber at heel and toe, with traction front and rear from softer and grippier rubber inserts. Fans of the 1400 will be pleased with the continued performance of this well-loved stalwart, and new runners will discover a versatile, lightweight racing and speedwork performer.

Testers: “Fit great and feel plenty light. Protective and springy to give me race day confidence over a broad range of distances.”

Sizes: Men 7-13,14; Women 5.5-16.5
Weight: 7.1 oz. (men’s size 11), 5.7 oz. (women’s 8)
Shape: semi-curved
Fit: snug heel, close forefoot
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted
Range: efficient runners – up to a marathon; heavy strikers, between 10K and 12K
