The Zurich meeting was spectacular, as Stuart Weir attests here, and we will look for his comments on Brussels on 6 September.

Impressions

In my final article on the Weltklasse, I will list some of the things that impressed me

1 The sheer quality of the performances that the following winners produced

Karsten Warholm 400H European record, DL record and World Lead (46.92)

Juan Miguel Echevarria Long Jump DL record and World Lead (8.65)

Shaunae Miller-Uibo 200m DL record and World Lead (21.74)

Lijiao Gong Shot World Lead and meeting record (20.31)

Donavan Brazier PR 800 (1:42.70)

Joshua Cheptegei PR 5000 (12 :57.41)

Shanieka Ricketts PR triple jump (14.93)

2 Geography rules

The top seven in the men’s 5000 were East Africans – 4 Ethiopians, 2 Kenyans and the Ugandan winner.

The top four in the women’s steeplechase were Kenyans

3 Quality in depth

Seven men over 5.73 in the pole vault

Six men over eight meters in the long jump

Four Germans in the men’s javelin final Andreas Hofmann (3), Johannes Vetter (5), Thomas Röhler (7) and Bernhard Seifert (8)

Nine women under 4:04 in the 1500m

Two poles in the men’s pole vault (Correction 2 Poles and 13 poles)

4 Great to see

Great to see Mutaz Essa Barshim back in action after injury. He jumped 2:20 for 19th place.

A full stadium

5 Most popular person in the stadium

Mujinga Kambundji (local athlete) or the lady who kept bringing free chocolate bars to sustain the writers in the media seats.
