OTHER DOHA NEWS

DOHA (QAT): Sporting rainbow-coloured hair, two-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce found a pot of gold at the end of the track, winning her fourth 100m title at the IAAF World Athletics Championships. A decade after she won her first title, and 13 months after giving birth to her son, 32-year-old Fraser-Pryce returned to the pinnacle of her sport, gapping the field to win in 10.71. “Standing here having done it again at 32, and holding my baby, is a dream come true,” Fraser-Pryce said. “I had no sleep last night. Last time I was at a major championship was 2016 and I just could not sleep with nerves. But with mental toughness you will get what you want. She decded not to run the 200 m, as also Dafne Schippers (adductor injury did not allow her to run the 100 m final) and Marie-Josee Ta Lou decided not to compete

DOHA (QAT): It was a night for the all-time greats as USA’s sweetheart Allyson Felix earned a record 12th World Championships gold medal in the newest event on the programme, the mixed 4x400m, and compatriot Christian Taylor secured a fourth triple jump crown inside Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium.

DOHA (QAT): Ice cool Anzelikha Sidorova was the last to flinch in a captivating final of the women’s pole vault as the authorised neutral athlete earned gold with a third-time clearance at 4.95m in the women’s pole vault. A World lead and third best ever outdoors performer.

DOHA (QAT): The United States broke the world record for the second time in as many days in the mixed 4x400m relay as Michael Cherry anchored the squad to a new benchmark of 3:09.34*, taking almost three seconds off the first round performance and delivering a 12th world gold to their second leg runner, Allyson Felix. After splits 44.9, 50.4, 49.9 and 44.2. The effort earned the team a US$100,000 world record bonus.

DOHA (QAT): The British squad, anchored by former European champion Martyn Rooney, were fourth, improving their European record to 3:12.27, and Poland’s boldness at least gained them a national record of 3:12.33 in fifth place.

DOHA (QAT): IAAF President Sebastian Coe appears to be on course to join the IOC after it was revealed here that he had been initially proposed for membership four years ago. IOC President Thomas Bach claimed that he first put Coe’s name forward in 2015 following his initial election as President of the IAAF but his application had raised concerns with the organisation’s Ethics Commission about possible conflicts of interest. Writes insidethegames. Coe’s membership is now firmly back on the agenda following his re-election for a second term as IAAF President here last Wednesday. It would then need to be formally recommended by the IOC Members Election Commission, chaired by Britain’s Princess Royal, before being confirmed by the IOC Executive Board. The final step would be the full membership formally approving his membership at the IOC Session on the eve of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
