60 Meters

What more is there to say about Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce? She has not run an indoor race since the World Championship final in 2014 and is ill but she goes out and runs 7.16 to beat the World Indoor Champion, Murielle Ahouré (7.22). This is her one and only indoor race this year – well, you have to find something to do on the way from Jamaica to the Laureus event in Berlin! She said afterwards: “I feel OK, I came out here today having had the flu so to come away with the win was good. Everyone is a challenge this year. The focus isn’t on one individual as everyone wants the Olympic title. Each race is a building block towards that”.1206482826.jpg

In fourth place was Amy Hunt from Great Britain in 7.36. Amy is 17! Back at High school on Monday and here she is lining up with SAFP! Her 200m PR is 22.42 (a world Under 18 record). She said of her race in Glasgow: “To race in that was insane, it was so surreal to race alongside those guys. The crowd was crazy and the reception was really weird but in a good way, it gave me such a confidence boost and I just enjoyed the race so much. 7.36s to me is another great time and I loved every moment of that. Running alongside Shelly-Ann was amazing. When I was growing up, I never thought I’d be running alongside her. I was six or seven when she won her first title and to be against her was such an out of body and surreal experience. Next week I’ll be back in Glasgow for the indoor champs racing again looking for the indoor title and you never know what might happen so it should be exciting. My aim is to run quicker, I’ve been running well but doing rounds suits me better than a straight final”.

Ronnie Baker followed his Millrose 60m win in 6.54 with a 6.50 victory at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow – after running a 6.55 prelim. Mike Rodgers was second in 6.67. Baker said afterwards: “I think that went pretty good but there are still things I need to work on and I don’t feel as quick as I should. At the end of the day, there’s no World Indoor Championships so it’s all prep for outdoors. Although I might not feel or be where I should be, there’s time to work on it. I know my first three steps could have been better, other than that I felt pretty good. It was my first time in Glasgow and I love the indoors just because it’s so intimate with the crowd”.

With no US team for the World Indoors to make, Baker will skip the US Champs and run the last two indoor series races in France and Spain this week.
