The WIT Lieven meeting was excellent. It has announced its return to the Athletics stage, with the fine performances. This is the review of the Lieven meeting by Alfons Juck and his team at EmE News.

LIEVIN (FRA, Feb 19): Lievin meeting which was not held in 2012-2017 period was staged for first time as World Indoor Tour event and it proved correct. Full hall with 5000 spectators in dramatic evening made for lot of noise. World leads in men´s 1500 m and 3000 m, meet records in men 60 m and women 1500 m, excellent pole vaults headed by Duplantis and Morris, World U20 indoor record in women 1500 m and all-time best in rare women 2000 m steeple.

Short event by event

Men
60m – A US one-two for Ronnie Baker in 6.44 meet record (a time only bettered by Christian Coleman this year) and Demek Kemp in 6.50 with European indoor champion Jan Volko from Slovakia third in 6.57 (equalled his NR).

800m – Kenya’s Collins Kipruto continued his unbeaten streak in 1:46.34. Both meeting record-holder Adam Kszczot and European leader Marc Reuther collided with each other with one lap to go.

1000m – Pierre Ambroise Bosse held off Andrew Osagie to win the last event on the programme, 2:19.26 to 2:19.31.

1500m – Ethiopia’s Samuel Tefera won by over one second in 3:35.54 WL. Spain’s Jesus Gomez came through to take second in 3:36.68 PB with Marcin Lewandowski third in 3:38:10.

3000m – Steeplechaser Getnet Wale held off Ethiopian teammate Selemon Barega, a world leading 7:32.80 to 7:33.19. Third Birhanu Balew Asian indoor record 7:34.58. Seventh Djilali Bedrani from France 7:41.40 EL.

60m hurdles – European champion Pascal Martinot-Lagarde blasted to a 7.47 EL clocking in top shape. Second Al-Youba Kuweit record 7.54.

Pole vault – After two world records over the last eleven days, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis cleared 6.07m before missing out at 6.19m. Sam Kendricks cleared 5.90m on his third attempt for second with Ben Broeders setting another Belgian record of 5.80m.

Triple jump – Another big jump of 17.51m for Burkina Faso’s Fabrice-Hugues Zango. European indoor champion Nazim Babayev jumped 17.15 EL in round three with Cuba’s Jordan Diaz also surpassing the 17m-line with 17.07m.

Women
60m – World 200m finalist Gina Bass smashed her Gambian record with 7.11 to run down world indoor champion Murielle Ahoure in 7.12.

800m – After winning over 1500m in Glasgow, Jemma Reekie stretched away on the last lap to win in 2:00.34 from world champion Halima Nakaayi from Uganda in 2:01.96.

1500m – After a hot early pace, Gudaf Tsegay won in 4:00.60 meet record from teammate Lemlem Hailu who improved her world indoor U20 record to 4:01.57.

2000m steeplechase – Slovenia’s Marusa Mismas set a all-time world best of 5:47.79 for the rarely run distance (without water jump). Her time was even faster than Gesa Felicitas Krause’s outdoor best of 5:52.80.

60m hurdles – World champion Nia Ali won the final on the dip from US teammate Christina Manning. Both athletes were timed at 7.92.

Long jump – Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk jumped 6.90m in the last round to surpass Ese Brume’s second round lead of 6.82m.

Pole vault – Sandi Morris cleared 4.83m on her second attempt before raising the bar to 5.03m. Venezuela’s Robeilys Peinado improved her national record to 4.73m and then to 4.78m with Sweden’s Angelica Bengtsson and Cuba’s Yarisley Silva both clearing 4.73m.
