Malaika Mihambo is the 2019 World Champion in the LJ with the longest LJ in 3 years.

Malaika Mihambo was sixth in the 2015 WC Long jump. In 2016, in she just missed a medal in the Olympics with an excellent 6.95m.

Malaika Mihambo won the 2018 European Ahletics Championships in Berlin with a 6.75m leap. A good jump, but not a world beater. In March 2019, Malaika was 4th in the LJ. In the European Team Championships, Malaika Mihambo showed her talent and potential with a 7.11 m leap and win.

The huge win in Doha was the icing on the cake. Malaika Mihambo leaped 7.30m and took the gold!

The longest jumper in the world will begin the 2020 season at the German championships.

This will be Mihambo’s first competition since the German Indoor Championships in Leipzig in late February when she finished second in the 60m in 7.22 and first in the long jump with 6.77m.

Mihambo will only contest the long jump in Braunschweig but she is planning to line up in the 100m the following weekend at the #TrueAthletes Classic in Leverkusen on 16 August. More competitions could follow as well.

“I am really looking forward to the upcoming competitions. As an athlete, you’re always looking for a challenge to get better,” said Mihambo, who captured the world long jump title last October with a brilliant jump of 7.30m.

Mihambo also surpassed the seven metre-line indoors this year at the ISTAF Indoor in Berlin with 7.07m in February. The world outdoor lead of 6.81m could be a target for Mihambo although she will be jumping off an abbreviated approach in Braunschweig.

The 26-year-old has been training at home in Germany this summer under the tutelage of German head coach Uli Knapp although she is still planning to relocate to the United States to be coached by Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell. The plans have been put on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“The current situation in the United States currently does not allow me optimal training conditions so I will continue to plan my training in Germany. As soon as the situation in Texas has normalised somewhat, we will see further,” she said.
