When one meets Johannes Vetter, you are taken by how much Johannes enjoys his sport. Having watched Johannes compete a dozen times, this writer has always been impressed with Vetter’s athleticism, his focus and his competitiveness. It’s great to see Johannes Vetter’s big throw!

Vetter unbelievable 97.76
CHORZOW (POL, Sep 6): Germany’s Johannes Vetter produced the second longest javelin throw in history at the 11th Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzow (WACT Gold), reaching out to an incredible 97.76m in round three to come within one metre of Jan Zelezny’s world record of 98.48m. He backed it up with a fourth round throw of 94.84m which was also in excess of his previous lifetime best of 94.44m. Ryan Crouser had another incredible series in the shot put, winning with a third round throw of 22.70m. His four other valid throws were also in excess of 22.40m: 22.53m, 22.59m, 22.52m and 22.42m. European champion Michal Haratyk was a distant runner-up with 21.78m. Pawel Fajdek defeated Wojciech Nowicki in the men’s hammer, 79.81m to 78.88m, and France’s Alexandra Tavernier won the women’s hammer with 74.12m. Olympic fourth-placer Maria Andrejczyk also continued her comeback by winning the women’s javelin with 65.70m from Latvia’s Lina Muze with 63.19m, world champion Daniel Stahl from Sweden recorded yet another win in the discus with 67.28m from Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh with 66.16m and Portugal’s Auriole Dongmo won the shot put by one centimetre from Czech Republic’s Marketa Cervenkova, 18.33m to 18.32 PB. The track highlight was the women’s 1500m with European champion Laura Muir breaking the 4:00-minute barrier for the 14th time with 3:58.24 ahead of Poland’s Sofia Ennaoui who broke the 4:00-minute barrier for the first time with a 3:59.70 PB. Fellow European champion Elvira Herman ended Nadine Visser’s unbeaten run in the 100m hurdles, 12.87 to 12.95, and Switzerland’s Ajla del Ponte also suffered her first loss of the season in the 100m, finishing third in 11.35 behind Dafne Schippers (11.29) and Ewa Swoboda (11.34). There were home wins for Piotr Lisek, who was competing for the first time since sustaining a small injury in Bydgoszcz, in the pole vault with 5.82m ahead of Sam Kendricks at 5.72m while the programme concluded with 400m wins for Karol Zalewski (45.74) and European champion Justyna Swiety-Ersetic (51.33). Ukraine’s Yuliya Levchenko also won the high jump with 1.92m from teammate Iryna Herashchenko at 1.89m.
