At the 2019 Doha WC, Adam Johnson Eder filmed all the award pressers, and I would ask the medalist questions. I love those events. At them, athletes got to celebrate the victories that they just had, and enjoy the company with competitors. That is how we met Fabrice Zango Hugues. Christian Taylor and Will Claye, the gold and silver medalists, gave Hughes huge praise in the presser, and Hughes was gracious.

On January 16, 2021, Fabrice Zango Hugues gave us a hint of his talent. In his sixth jump at the Meeting d’Abiere, Fabrice Zango Hugues soared to a huge triple jump, 18.07m, a new world record by 15 centimeters!

AUBIERE (FRA, Jan 16): World championships bronze medalist Fabrice Zango Hugues from Burkina Faso improved at Meeting d´Aubiere in last round the triple jump World indoor record by 15 cm. The African record holder indoor and outdoor bettered with 18.07 the result of his coach Teddy Tamgho who achieved 17.92 as winner of European Indoor championships 2011 in Paris-Bercy. He is first ever indoors with 18+ and overall 7th all-time to get such a mark. His series: f – 17.33 – f – 17.61 – 17.70 – 18.07. Hugues is the first ever African male athlete who achieved official World record (indoor or outdoor) in a jumping event. Second Melvin Raffin got 16.98 and third Jean-Marc Pontvianne 16.49. “With the pandemic it is true that we had a lot of problems in terms of preparation conditions but we did a training camp in Guadeloupe which allowed me to refine the technique. I had a good feeling in training and had good sessions the last two weeks, but competition is something else. I was confident in my abilities and it is a special day because I broke the world record of Teddy who is my coach so we share that together and we have a really special link now,” said Hugues. His next meet will be on January 22 in Miramas. Also to note Jean-Pierre Bertrand 794 and Hilary Kpatcha 658 in the long jump. US guest Tori Franklin won women triple 13.60.

Athletics continues to break records and amaze the world 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 congrats to @HuguesZango_TS for becoming first athlete to cross the 18m barrier indoors‼️‼️‼️ @WorldAthletics @TeddyTamgho pic.twitter.com/d3dKNxBQQE
