In the coolness of the Engenhao stadium, I was sitting in the BBC radio row. I was asked, just a minute prior to the Men’s 800m final where I believed Clayton Murphy would finish. I told my friends at the BBC, “third”. When asked why post-race, I noted that Clayton seemed to have this ability, in each round to move down the final stretch unencumbered. Clayton Murphy took Olympic bronze in Rio 2016.

In 2017, 2018, he battled injuries and in 2019 he began the long road back to global racing, making it to Doha and finishing last in the final. 2020 and 2021 were a move back to Akron, Ohio, and returning to his alma mater, the University of Akron, to be coached by his college coach.

2021 has been a good season for Clayton Murphy. On January 21, 2021, Clayton set his 800m PB indoors at 1:48.40.

He built his outdoor season well, and he capped it off with a brilliant 800m win in Eugene, Oregon at the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 21, 2021. The race was spectacular, as he ran down Isaiah Jewitt and taking the then world lead of 1:43.17, and set his personal best.

How will he do in Tokyo? Clayton Murphy has the wheels, and the experience to stand out in the Men’s 800m in Tokyo, one of the events that I pick to be the most outstanding in Tokyo 2021!

Enjoy this interview with Clayton Murphy, done in early 2020, as he was moving back the midwest. Clayton was alot of fun and you can see his enthusiasm on beginning his new life with his wife, Arianna Washington. They were married on December 7, 2019.
