This was another indication of how Ian Beattie and Mark Munro see the current situation with British Athletics. It is key that one of the most important federations in all of global athletics put on major meetings and have someone who actually appreciates the upcoming tasks of hosting a Diamond League meeting!

CHERRY ALEXANDER TO RE-JOIN UK ATHLETICS

UK Athletics is pleased to confirm that Cherry Alexander OBE is re-joining the organisation as the UK Athletics Major Events and International Relations Lead.

The appointment will see the highly regarded athletics organiser return to the governing body with immediate effect after departing her role as Major Events Director in November 2020.

Her previous 29 years’ service at UKA included delivering 22 global events, acting as Meeting Director for numerous grand prix events and delivering 60 national championships. Her role of honour includes the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the year Unsung Hero Award, received an MBE and OBE as part of the 2012 and 2019 New Year’s Honours and Queens birthday lists, IAAF Woman of the Year 2017 and being elected European Athletics vice president in 2019.

Cherry, who is also Vice President of European Athletics and has recently assisted World Athletics with various projects, will return to oversee National and International level events led and supported by UK Athletics.

Mark Munro Interim CEO said:

“We are thrilled that Cherry will be re-joining UKA in this strategic lead role. She is one of the most respected figures in global athletics and one of the very best in event planning and delivery.

“This is such a key time for athletics and we need to make sure we have the best people available working for us. She has been instrumental in the successful delivery of so many previous events so it’s a great boost that we can bring her back to UKA and benefit from those skills.”

Cherry Alexander said:

“It’s a real honour to be asked to return to UKA, I am always motivated working with people who are genuinely passionate about our beautiful sport and who will strive to make it a success. Mark and Ian Beattie have shared their ambitions for the sport and events and there is no doubt the next few years will be busy!

“I’m thrilled to be linking up again with friends and colleagues who love this sport and who want to be part of this new but challenging era. Let’s get started!”
