Marcell Jacobs is the toast of Italy. His gold medals, at the 100m, and at the 4x100m relays, have made nearly every Italian boy and girl think about being a sprinter. That Marcell is running several indoor meets across Europe. The Orlen cup will feature Marcell in the 60 meters on February 11, 2022.

If you have never been to an indoor meet in Poland, you are missing a treat. I visited Sopot in 2014 for the World Indoor Champs, and Torun in 2019 as part of the World Indoor Tour. Both events were amazing. The Polish crowds were fantastic and the the venues were exciting. I am putting Lodz on my to do list.

You should too!

Olympic 100m and 4x100m champion Marcell Jacobs from Italy will compete on Polish soil again at the Orlen Cup in Lodz on 11 February, a World Indoor Tour Silver meeting.

Jacobs is planning a full indoor season beginning at the ISTAF Indoor in Berlin on 4 February and culminating at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade between 18-20 March. The Italian is also scheduled to compete in Lievin on 17 February and at the Italian Indoor Championships in Ancona on 25-27 February.

Prior to his double Olympic triumph in Tokyo, Jacobs was particularly successful in Poland. He blazed to the European indoor 60m title in Torun in a world leading 6.47 and he also ran two blazing legs for Italy’s 4x100m team at the World Relays in Silesia.

Jacobs, who also finished second at this meeting in 2021, is due to face a strong line-up including American veteran Mike Rodgers who pipped Jacobs to victory last year – 6.52 to 6.53. Rodgers is also a former world indoor silver medallist and a perennial sub-10 second competitor outdoors in the 100m.

The field events will also be in focus at the Atlas Arena. The men’s pole vault features a strong Polish cohort including three-time world medallist Piotr Lisek, 2011 world champion Pawel Wojciechowski and 2016 European champion Robert Sobera up against two-time Olympic medallist Thiago Braz from Brazil.

In the shot put, European outdoor champion Michal Haratyk goes head-to-head with Tomas Stanek from Czech Republic who dethroned his Polish rival for the European indoor title in Torun last March. Konrad Bukowiecki is also due to compete.

In other events, Spain’s 2016 Olympic 110m hurdles silver medallist Orlando Ortega faces local favourite Damian Czykier in the men’s 60m hurdles while Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper from Jamaica has also been announced for the women’s 60m hurdles.

Meeting director Sebastian Chmara said: “We strongly believe we will be able to enjoy athletics at the highest level in the company of the best fans. We hope that after the break, fans of the queen of sport will be able to sit in the stands of the Lodz hall again.

“I emphasise it, especially because I know how our athletes miss performances in front of the audience, especially in Poland.”
