LAUSANNE (SUI): European Athletics notes that in total, 15 European indoor champions from Torun 2021 last year will go in search of global honours at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
ATHENS (GRE): Greek Pole vault star Emmanouil Karalis after his hamstring injury at the Belgrade Open meeting last week sadly withdrew from the Championships. “Unfortunately the pain surpassed my passion for the sport and I´ve ended up wrapping up the season here,” he said in a post on social media.
BELGRADE (SRB): Olympic winner Shaunae Miller-Uibo after arrival to Serbia: “We just got in today and so far I feel pretty good. I came out just to get a shake-out and just get ready for the champs. For me this one is just a chance to see where we’re at with training. That’s said, it’s the first one of the year and it’s a World Championships so I definitely have to be ready. But it’s partly just to have a bit of fun. The main goal this season is to be ready to defend my title at the World [Outdoor] Championships in Oregon and this is about working towards that goal. After that, cross fingers, I’ll do the Commonwealth Games as well.”
BELGRADE (SRB): Tom Walsh believes he can beat favourite Ryan Crouser to take a third consecutive World Indoor crown this weekend. The New Zealander said: “I’m sick and tired of finishing second (to Crouser). Some people will admit Ryan Crouser is too good for them, but I don’t believe that. I know I have been in 23.30m shape before and I can get there again, it is just about fine-tuning the throwing and figuring it out.” Via Athletics New Zealand.
BELGRADE (SRB): Middle-distance runner Jack Anstey has replaced Stewart McSweyn, who dropped out last week, on Australia’s team for the World Indoors. The US-based runner told Athletics Australia: “Obviously with it being my first major championships, just having the experience is going to be massive, however, I really do want to make the final.” Anstey improved to 3:38.65 over 1500 m in February in Boston.
BELGRADE (SRB): Daryll Neita, who has won two World silvers and two Olympic bronzes with the British 4x100m relay squad, says she is keen to gain individual success in Belgrade. The sprinter said: “I’ve been getting them with the relay team since 2016. I’m proud to be a part of the relay squad – we want the world outdoor gold medal this year, but it’s also time for me to get on the podium by myself now.” From BBC Sport.
BELGRADE (SRB): Captain of the Spanish team in Belgrade will be European record holder Adel Michel. He also said for El Mundo Deportivo he plans to try a marathon by the time of next Olympic Games in Paris.
BELGRADE (SRB): World Athletics published on its website how it will be possible to follow the event, including the list of all television stations who will broadcast. That also means that the rest of the countries will be able to see the championships via the youtube and Facebook of WA.
ZURICH (SUI): Swiss team was travelling without hurdlers Jason Joseph and Finley Gaio who had positive covid tests. The aim is that both could travel as soon as possible to be able to compete on Sunday in their 60 m hurdles event.
PRAGUE (CZE): Czech team travelled with Olympic 1500 m finalist Kristiina Maki who also had a positive covid test. Under question is the participation of hurdler Helena Jiranova, about her participation the decision will be made in the coming hours.
DARMSTADT (GER): In German team missing due to illness: triple jumper Max Hess and 1500 m runner Christoph Kessler. From leichtathletik.de.
