In college for a few years, we were fortunate to run a track meet at San Jose State. In the 1960s and 1970s, SJS was known as “Speed City”, due to the incredible sprinters that came out of San Jose. What many did not think about were the athletes like Felix Bohni and John Powell, who made their names in the pole vault and discus. Their distance team won the NCAA cross country in the 1960s, and some fine athletes came out of the program for many years.

One of my favorites was Urs Kamber. Urs was on the Swiss relay team that went to Moscow in 1980 and finished 3rd in heat 3 of the Men’s 4x400m. Urs was the anchor. He was a great guy and we would chat during our warm-ups and cooldowns. I ran a 2 mile there, with Simon Kilili winning the race, going sub 9 minutes. I was about in twelfth place, but most of us scored big PBs that day. It was fun, it was fast, and after a 3000m indoors a few weeks before, and a windy 5000m at Cal, running 8 laps on the fast Tartan track at San Jose State was really exciting.

Your workout for today: Saturday: warm-up, Racing on the relay, 4x400m, plus a 1000m, or an 800m, cool down
