Day 3: 20k Race Walk: Tim Seamen wins title 37! by Larry Eder

Men’s 20k Race Walk
Race walking gets no respect. It is the Rodney Dangerfield of track & field. Yet, speak to any exercise physiologist and they will tell you, that after Cross country skiers, race walkers maximize their VO2 max even better than distance runners.
Consider Tim Seaman for one moment. Tim won US title number THIRTY-SEVEN on Saturday, with his fine 20 kilometer walk on a not too fast course, in a smart 1:26.14.26. Patrick Stroupe was second in 1:26:41.44 and Ben Shorey, who had started with Seaman, was third in 1:27:17.50.
Tim had these comments after his most recent achievement: “We started and Ben (Shorey) took off from the beginning, which surprised me. Patrick (Stroupe) and I were talking and he wanted to go after him right away. I told him to calm down and we slowly realed Shorey in.
It was very good, Iâ€™m very happy with the win. I want to be a good mentor to the young athletes that I coach and it helps when I win.
Iâ€™m very thankful I had the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) as a sponsor. Without them, there would be no 37th national title today.”
