GAY WITH RODGERS IN THE SAME HEAT
ROMA (ITA): Updates from Golden Gala meeting. Kenenisa Bekele confirmed he will not chase fast time at 5000 m, but the win. Not running will be World CC Champion Gebre Gebremariam. Another late withdrawal is Augustine Choge from 1500 m and in the same women race world leader Gelete Burka of Ethiopia. There will be two 100 m heats in men and women sections. Tyson Gay will run with US Champion Mike Rodgers in heat one, Asafa Powell and Daniel Bailey in heat two with olympic medalist Richard Thompson of Trinidad making his European debut of the year. In women heats, olympic winner Shelly-Ann Fraser with Trinidad´s Kelly Baptiste in first race and Carmelita Jeter with Kerron Stewart in second. The qualification modus operandi is top four from each heat and one fastest to make a nine-athlete final.
EVORA WINNING 17.22
BEOGRAD (SRB, July 9): Olympic and world gold medalist Nelson Evora won the triple jump during Universiade in Serbia with 17.22 (-0.7) ahead of Cuban Hector Fuentes (17.13, 0.0). Bulgarian European Champion 2006 Vanya Stambolova clocked fourth fastest time in Europe 55.14 to win the 400 m hurdles. German champion Jonna Tilgner was second (56.02) ahead of Danish Sara Petersen with new national record 56.40. Overseas athletes dominated the flat race as Senegal´s Bintou Fall won in 51.65 with Canadain Esther Akinsulie second (51.70). In men´s 400 m Japanese win for Yuko Kanemaru (45.68) ahead of Austrian Clemens Zeller (46.12). Australian Madeleine Pape was clear 800 m winner (2:01.91) and Russian Vyacheslav Sokolov won close finish at 1500 m (3:42.49) just 0.01 ahead of Algerian Samir Khadar. In technical events African record holder Sunette Viljoen won the javelin (62.52) beating world junior record holder Vira Rebryk of Ukraine (61.02). Russian Eduard Malchenko was the best in high jump on count-back over Canadian Michael Mason as both cleared 223 cm. Belarus Mikhial Shubianok won the decathlon after high average in discus, javelin and in 1500 m with final score 7960 points. In men´s 200 m semifinals again the Egyptian record holder Ibrahim Seoud was the fastest (20.73, +0.8).
15 YEARS OLD BRITON WINS THE 100 m
BRESSANONE (ITA, July 9): 15 years old Briton Jodie Williams clocked 11.39 world youth leading of 2009 to win the girls 100 m at World Youth Championships. Silver for Virgin Islands and its sole representative at the event Allison Peter (11.47). US Prezel Hardy won clearly the boys 100 m in 10.57 (-1.2) ahead of Canadian Aaron Brown (10.74) who was fastest on Wednesday in first two rounds. But Hardy clocked the overall fastest in semis 10.38 (+1.1). More gold medals for European athletes. Norway talent Isabelle Pedersen won the 100 m hurdles in 13.23 (+0.3) and achieved even better yearly best 13.20 (+1.0) in semifinals. This is third fastest ever, better only Adriana Lamalle 13.08 in 1999 and Sally McLellan 13.14 in 2003. US Kori Carter improved to 13.26 to be second. Slovenian senior hammer record holder Barbara Spiler won her event (59.33) and French Kevin Mayer was the best in octathlon (6478, world U17 leader) with good finish in javelin and at 1000 m. His score is also European best ever in U17 category and second behind Cuban Yordanis Garcia who scored 6482 in 2005. Surprise gold medal for Thailand in long jump as Supanara leaped to 763 and 765 to be the best. Grenada´s 400 m favorite Kirani James posted good quality 46.43 in semifinals.
DARIEN RUNS STANDARD FOR BERLIN
ALBERTVILLE (FRA, July 9): French Garfield Darien clocked at EAP Meet in Albertville Berlin standard in the heats of 110 m hurdles (13.52, +1.5), he also won the finals but with windy 13.38 (+4.4). In long jump also wind assisted marks for Kafetien Gomis (815, +3.4) and Frederic Erin (803, +2.2) with paralympic medalist Arnaud Assoumani (780, +2.6). US Sprinter Thomas Hunter won both his events, 100 m in 10.18 (+2.1) and 200 m in 20.45 (+1.0). Another US win for shot putter Russ Winger (19.91). In women events Canadian Adrienne Power won the 200 m (23.23, +2.0), Jamaican Vonette Dixon the 100 m hurdles (13.00, +0.5) and US athletes Becky Holliday pole vault (435) and Erica McLain triple jump. Her 14.00 were wind-aided +3.0, best legal 13.97 (+0.5).
