Here are a couple of Alfons Juck’s notes on the second session of Day 1 of the World Championships in Daegu, Korea!

QUOTE OF
THE SESSION

Vivian Cheruiyot: “Maybe in five years I will try marathon. Seeing today
our team winning in the morning was a big motivation for us. I hope for same
sweep for our men in 10 000
m.”

 

RESULT OF
THE SESSION

Usain Bolt in old superb style easy 10.10 and reminding of Bolt 2008 and
2009, Kim Collins at age of 35 clocked third fastest 100 m heat time 10.13 against
the strongest wind -1.7 (he competes in his 8th World Championships).

 

SURPRISE
OF THE SESSION

2007 World Champion and 2008 Olympic winner Christine Ohuruogu false
starting in the 400 m
heats.

 

FAVORITES FALLS

Handicaped by illness the whole year European hammer champion Libor
Charfreitag did not qualify in hammer (72.20). Here 75.36 was enough to
qualify. Out in long jump qualification Russian former 400m runner and now 7 meters athlete Olga
Zaytseva, olympic medalist Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria and Swiss record holder
Irene Pusterla.

Women 10 000 m: First 1-2-3-4 finish for Kenya at women 10 000m in the
history of the World Championships. There has been 1-2-3 by Ethiopian in two
occasions – 2001 and 2005 – but never 1-2-3-4, both men and women’s side. It
was also the greatest dominance by African born runners, occupying first 6
places. Previously, in 2009, African born runners occupied first 5 place.
Cheuriyot ran her 3rd track 10
000 m (previous two also in 2011), Masai her 7th and
Kipyego (debuting at World Champs) her 8th.

BELGIUM: Belgian talent Thomas Van der Plaetsen is
fourth in decathlon after first day (4280), he had difficult last weeks and
days as he lost his father. He was best in long jump (779) and high jump (217).

 

PORTUGAL: Ana Dulce Felix was the best European in the 10 000 m with 31:37.03 as
8th.

 

ETHIOPIA: Meseret Defar did not finish due to stomach
pain, but wants to be ready for 5000
m. Also Kenyan medalists are planning for a 5000 m (Cheruiyot and
Masai).

 

USA: World long jump champion Brittney Reese saved
her in the qualification with last jump 679, enough to qualify was 651.  Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee dominating the
decathlon after first day.

 

JAMAICA: Asafa Powell spoke to media and explained his
situaition, relay does not look good and maybe he would be forced to finish the
season. “I worked for Daegu last 12 months and nothing,” he said in
disappointed mood.
