Lemaitre beats Gatlin in Rabat, by Alfons Juck, note by Larry Eder

Christophe Lemaitre knows that he continues to develop as a sprinter. For Lemaitre, his 100 meter race in Rabat must be a nice indication that his fitness is going in the right direction and that he is in the fight. 

For Justin Gatlin, who was 4/4 so far this season, until Rabat, his 10.02 for second is a good indication of where his strength is, and what he needs to do before Des Moines and the US championships.

RABAT (MAR, Jun 9): 6th Meeting International Mohammed VI in windy Rabat (IAAF World Challenge) registered first years loss for Justin Gatlin who just returned from Rome Diamond League win. In +2.9 race he clocked 10.02 and was beaten by European Champion Christophe Lemaitre 9.98. Third Kim Collins 10.10. 2008 Olympic winner LaShawn Merritt won after Rome again in 45.22 ahead of Josh Mance 45.65 with olympic winners Jeremy Wariner fifth 46.06 and Angelo Taylor 7th 47.72. As usual great distances. World leader Mohamed Aman won the 800 m in 1:44.37 over US Duane Solomon 1:44.91, new Kenyan name with sub 1:44 at home Jeremiah Mutai was 5th 1:46.69. Home win for Fouad El Kaam in the 1500 m 3:34.68 with good European results German Carsten Schlangen second 3:35.07 and Belgian Pieter-Jan Hannes fifth in national U23 record 3:35.97. Kenyan olympic medalist Thomas Longosiwa won the 5000 m in 13:03.58 ahead of Aweke Ayalew representing Bahrain 13:05.00 with Albert Rop also Bahrain again new Asian junior record 13:09.84 as fourth. French Yoann Kowal in his new event steeple superb win in personal best 8:12.53 ahead of home Hamid Ezzine 8:13.27 and Ethiopian record holder Gari Roba8:14.39. Moroccan sprint win for Aziz Ouhadi in the 200 m 20.59 (+3.1, Borlee brothers among others). DL winner Bohdan Bondarenko confirmed his shape with 228 win over Italian Silvano Chesani also 228 (equaled outdoor PB). Spanish Eusebio Caceres impressed with 822 (-0.1) in the long jump beating Louis Tsatoumas of Greece 802 (-1.3). Another Spanish win for Mario Pestano in discus 65.79. Jamaican Kerron Stewart won the 100 m in 11.24 (+1.3) with Gabon record holder Ruddy Zang Milama second 11.29, US Tori Bowie 11.31 and German Verena Sailer 11.33. Olympic medalist Yekaterina Poistogova showed top shape with 1:59.80 win at the 800 m and second Siham Hilali personal best 2:00.20. Eugene winner Hellen Obiri clocked 4:03.55 to top the 1500 m ahead of Kenyan Mary Kuria 4:05.40 and surprise Luiza Gega of Albania 4:05.79. Ethiopian Hiwot Ayalew was the best in steeple9:18.72 in close finish over world leader Lydia Chepkurui from Kenya9:18.77. World record holder Gulnara Galkina was 5th 9:30.72. Angela  Morosanu confirmed her top shape with 54.37 win at 400 m hurdles. More European wins for olympic finalist Hanna Knyazeva in triple 14.29 (-1.2) and European champion Linda Stahl in javelin 60.34 just 3 cm ahead of Latvian Madara Palameika 60.31.

Stepaniuk 199 NR and Barshim 233
OPOLE (POL, Jun 9): Special high jump meet in Poland (but in the stadium, pits positioned at the 100 m straight) saw new national record for Kamila Stepaniuk with 199 first attempt clearance. She did not continue afterwards. The former mark of Danuta Bulkowska 197 was from 1984. Stepaniuk already with 195 improved her best. She did not had any failure in the competition with in total 7 valid jumps.  It is also second best mark in the world 2013. Second Justyna Kasprzycka also great improvement to 195 and qualified for Moscow too. Asian record holder Mutaz Essa Barshim won with 233 and tried then at new meet record 238 (Ivan Ukhov has 237). He also cleared all heights in first except of 229 on third. Second Szymon Kiecana improved dramatically to 231 and qualified for Moscow.

Melnychenko 6416 WL
KLADNO (CZE, Jun 9): Ukrainian Hanna Melnychenko scored world leading heptathlon 6416 points at the TNT Express combined events meet (part of IAAF CE Challenge). Second Karolina Tyminska from Poland also good 6360 and third Czech Eliska Klucinova 6190 standard for Moscow.  Belarus Katsiaryna Netsviatayeva was fourth with personal best 5984. In decathlon Andrey Kravchenko won clearly with 8380 points, second Dmitriy Karpov 7978 and third Czech Lukas Marek with 7753 improvement.

Walcott only third
JOENSUU (FIN, Jun 9): Olympic javelin winner Keshorn Walcott was third at Joensuu Games with 78.90. Winner Teemu Wirkkala achieved 82.38 and second Lasse Etelatalo 80.39. Leif Arrhenius from Sweden won the shot put in new personal best 20.21. Russian Andrey Patrakov cleared 222 in the high jump. Australians dominated in the 1500 m, winner Cameron Page 3:38.27 PB ahead of long distance runner Collis Birmingham 3:38.44. From women events Dutch Susen Kuijken won the 1500 m 4:08.76, Sandra Eriksson the steeple 9:48.58 and Russian Yevgeniya Kononova 190 in the high jump.

OTHER RESULTS

ALPHEN AAN DEN RIJN (NED, Jun 9): At the 42nd Gouden Spike meeting stars from Hengelo competed. Dylan Armstrong 20.49 in shot put, Erik Cadee 64.27 in discus and Ignisious Gaisah 776 (+0.6) in the long jump. Gregory Sedoc won the hurdles 13.62 (+0.2) and Dafne Schippers the 100 m in 11.64 (-1.7). Briton Hayley Jones topped the 200 m in 23.49 (+0.4). 

BERNHAUSEN (GER, Jun 9): German Arthur Abele scored top 8151 in decathlon here. Missed the 8200 Moscow standard.

SOLLENTUNA (SWE, Jun 9): Super talent Irene Ekelund (16) clocked here windy 23.24 (+2.3) at the 200 m, so no Swedish junior record.

MARIHN (GER, Jun 9): World champion David Storl won in the Marihn Garden special shot put competition with 20.24 m.

LISBON (POR, Jun 8-9): Men of Benfica and women of Sporting won the club titles in Portugal. Olympic triple winner Nelson Evora leaped to 16.68 (+1.9). Rasul Dabo won the hurdles 13.78. Legendary Rui Silva returned after injury and was second in the 3000 m 8:08.00 and won the 5000 m in 14:19.38.

DUBLIN (IRL, Jun 9): At Open Games 400 m runner Brian Gregan improved in the 200 m 21.05 ahead of David Hynes 21.11. 

BRISBANE (AUS, Jun 9): New Oceanian youth record with 5 kg hammer Matt Denny 81.44 m.

CRETEIL (FRA, Jun 8): European champion Myriam Soumare clocked here 11.49 (+1.3) in the 100 m and windy 11.38 (+2.2) in heats.

NEUBRANDENBURG (GER, Jun 9): Top U18 results, new German records, Patrick Muller with 5 kg shot put 21.88 and Henning Prufer with 1.5 kg discus 65.87.

MARCHFELD (AUT, Jun 9): Kenyan Daniel Mwangi won the Raiffeisen Schlössermarathon in 1:08:21 at the half distance. Second Dickson Terer 1:08:49.
