Eunice Sum won the gold medal at 800 meters in Moscow, foiling Mariya Savinova from defending her 2011 title. Sum has stayed on the roll after Moscow, and won tonight’s Zurich Weltklasse event as well.

On Sunday, September 1, Eunice Sum will be racing the 1,500 meters at the 72nd ISTAF Berlin meeting! How will she do? You will have to wait a few days! 


SUM IN THE 1500 M

BERLIN (GER): For the 72nd ISTAF in Berlin on Sunday (IAAF World Challenge) women hammer will see not only the clash of Tatyana Lysenko and Anita Wlodarczyk, but also Betty Heidler the home star will be involved after the Moscow disappointment. Eunice Sum the 800 m champion will run the 1500 m against her team-mate Hellen Obiri who won silver at the distance. Men 100 m is having Kemar Bailey-Cole against Kim Collins as headliners. Kenyans Ezekiel Kemboi and Paul Kipsiele Koech will run another steeple in the season after Weltklasse in Zurich.

 

OLIVER, WHITING AND MANY MORE

ZAGREB (CRO): The 63rd Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb (IAAF World Challenge on September 3) will have several World champions from Moscow competing. Mainly the home hero Sandra Perkovic in women discus. David Oliver will run the hurdles (against other medalists Ryan Wilson and Sergey Shubenkov), Ryan Whiting is scheduled to compete in the shot put, World leader Tero Pitkamaki in javelin (against Andreas Thorkildsen), Sally Pearson at 100 m hurdles and in strong women 100m Nigerian star Blessing Okagbare will face Barbara Pierre and Kerron Stewart among others. In the men 400 m World bronze winner Luguelin Santos will run against European Champion Pavel Maslak. Women 800 m should see World Champion Eunice Sum and also former World winner Caster Semenya of South Africa.

 

BUBKA LEADING

LONDON (GBR): Insidethegames website is having an on-line poll about IOC Presidential candidates. Currently clearly leading is legendary pole vaulter Sergey Bubka with more than 40 percent of votes. Over 15 percent for current second Richard Carrion.

 

JEYLAN HM DEBUT

LUANDA (ANG): The first International Half Marathon in Luanda on
Sunday
 will have very special entry in World silver winner at 10 000 m Ethiopian Ibrahim Jeylan. For the World Champion 2011 this should be the debut at the distance. More top names from Ethiopia are Deresa Chimsa and Abera Kuma. From Kenya John Mwangangi and Pius Kirop with Philemon Yator. Spanish Chema Martinez runs also with Briton Scott Overall. In women category Pascalia Jepkoech and Eunice Jepkirui. From Ethiopians Worknesh Degefa, Tirfi Tsegaye, Mestewet Tufa and Abebech Afework.

SURANY (SVK): Last weekend Olympic wedding happened in Slovakia among walkers. Zuzana Malikova married at home Irish walker Jamie Costin.

 

ATLANTA (USA): US high jump record holder Chaunte Howard-Lowe became mother for the third time. Her son was named Mario Josiah Lowe. She had before two daughters Jasmina and Aurora.

 

 

 

WELTKLASSE NEWS

 

 

ZURICH (SUI): The spectators today at Letzigrund stadium will be able to bet for the winners directly in the stadium. Main actors in the ceremonies will be Swiss musicians. Soul pop singer Caroline Chevin and the male voices Quartett I Quattro will be responsible for the musical highlight of the evening.

 

ZURICH (SUI): To add to great shot put competitions at Zurich Train Station. In total 4 continental indoor records were registered. Valerie Adams 20.97 and 20.98 for Oceania and Argentinian German Lauro 20.44 and 20.53 for South America.

 

 

 

OTHER NEWS

 

 

THUM (GER): The throwing meet in Thum on Friday will celebrate its 10th edition. Special shot put with world champion David Storl and Moscow silver winner Christina Schwanitz. In discus the main name Nadine Muller. Men javelin will see David Golling, Thomas Rohler and US Moscow entry Riley Dolezal. Main rival for Storl will be double olympic winner Tomasz Majewski.

 

LINZ (AUT): Did you know that Austrian top hurdler and Olympic finalist Beate Schrott is not competing currently due to an injury made an special appearance at the Linz Meet on Monday. She arrived from the air with the parachutes. Her legs were shaking but she made it.

 

VALENCE (FRA): Interesting athletes at the start of the Decanation in Valence on August 31st. Newly crowned world champion Teddy Tamgho takes on Christian Taylor while Thomas Martinot-Lagarde battles it out against Sergey Shubenkov and Ryan Wilson. Queen Harrison is the favourite along with Cindy Billaud in the 100m hurdles with Ivet Lalova and Barbara Pierre taking on French junior Stella Akakpo. Other interesting names are Brigetta Barrett and Maria Kuchina in the high jump, Francena McCorory, Alysia Johnson-Montano, Nick Symmonds, Michelle Carter and French world championships medalists Renaud Lavillenie and Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad.

 

AMSTERDAM (NED): The first edition of the Flame Games are set to be held this Saturday and agent Jos Hermens is very happy about the set up of the event. Hermens has been trying for years to bring a top athletics event to Amsterdam and the Olympic stadium and is proud to welcome athletes such as Churandy Martina, Ignasious Gaisah, Dafne Schippers, Caster Semenya, Sifan Hassan, Kellie Wells, Wallace Spearmon and Keston Bledman to the event.

 

TILBURG (NED): Dutch European junior 5000m champion Jip Vastenburg has canceled her participation at the Tilburg Ten Miles. The youngster would have been among the top contenders but will not be able to run due to a foot problem. In other situation he was pre-selected for the December European CC Championships in Beograd. Also pre-selected were Susan Kuijken and Maureen Koster for the women race.

 

KINGSTON (JAM): Pan Am Junior and Carifta Games Under-20 100m champion Zharnel Hughes will be a student at Kingston College (KC) when the new school year begins on September 2. Informs Trackalerts. The Anguillan sprinter, who has been awarded a scholarship to attend the IAAF’s Regional High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) in Kingston, will wear the Purple and White jersey when the new track and field season runs off in January.

 

PHOENIX (USA): The World Athletics Center announced that American 400 hurdler Jeshua Anderson will be joining the training group based in Phoenix, Arizona. Anderson won four straight Pac-10 titles whilst at Washington State University, where he also won three NCAA titles, a World University gold and a National USA title. He competed at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, however a hamstring strain two weeks before trials hampered his chances of making the USA Olympic squad. Informs the Center website. He will arrive in Arizona in September as he prepares for the 2014 outdoor season.

 

MOSCOW (RUS): Russian Federation President Valentin Balakhnichev confirmed for All-Sports that winners from Moscow World Championships will have wild cards for Beijing 2015, including long jump hero Aleksandr Menkov. He added
that he is ready to recieve proposal from the coaches also about 2014 and possible byes concerning the European Championships participation.

 

 

 

RESULTS

 

 

BUCURESTI (ROU, Aug 24): Olympic marathon winner 2008 Constantina Dita Tomescu (43) was competing at the national championships last weekend in the 10 000 m. She finished 7th in 36:06.12.

 

REDUIT (MRI, Aug 29): The 11th African Junior Championship started here. Kenyan main hopes are Festus Kiprono, a Form Four Student at Kimuron Secondary School in Keiyo North, and John Koech who will line up in boy’s 3000m steeple final, which will be the last event of the day. Former World Youth 1500 m finalist Sheila Chepng’etich will be hunting for Kenya’s first medal in the girls 3000 m final. The continental championship has attracted over 800 upcoming track and field athletes under 19-years of age. Due to a lack of competitors, the men’s and women’s pole vole events of the African junior championships are canceled. The event will continue untilSunday.
