Two of Russia’s talented high jumpers, 2012 Olympic champ Ivan Ukhov and 2011 World Champs silver medalist, Aleksay Dmitrik (also two time silver medalist, European indoors) became the first two men, in one compeition, to clear 2.40m. Dmitrik made three attempts at 2.42m, and missed. Ukhov held off until 2.44m and missed all three times, but had a nice close one on the second jump, where the bar fell off after he cleared the bar. Ukhov won as he took only one attempt at 2.40m.

The Arnstadt meet looks to be in its last year, per stories in the German media. If that is the case, and that is terribly unfortunate, then, the high jump meeting went out in a historical moment.

Ukhov, you will remember, set the newest Russian high jump record indoors at 2.41m (7’10 3/4) on January 14, 2014. That was Ukhov’s third Russian record. The two time European indoor high jump champ and 2010 World indoor champ has only three high jumpers who have jumped higher: Ukhov is equal third with Patrik Sjoberg, who cleared 2.41m in 1987, Carlo Thranhardt, 2.42m in 1988 and of course, Javier Sotomayor, 1993, with his 2.43m).

Ukhov 240, Dmitrik 240, Licwinko 200
ARNSTADT (GER, Feb 8): The most probably final edition of Arnstadt High Jump meet with music (38th) was one of the best. For sure the men competition was historical as for first time ever two men cleared in one competition 240. Russian Ivan Ukhov in first attempt and his team-mate Aleksey Dmitrik (also a huge PB for him) in second. Dmitrik then tried three times at Russian record 242 while Ukhov passed and had three very close attempts at World record height 244 cm. Ukhov had only three jumps before 240 at 224, 230 and 236. Third Russian Lev Missirov new PB 233 ahead of Donald Thomas who equaled his indoor PB 233 and Italian Marco Fassinotti not only new PB but equaled Italian national indoor record 233. Then followed Oly winner Andrey Silnov, returning Raul Spank and Euro winner 2010 Aleksandr Shustov all 224. Excellent also women competition before the sell out crowd (1500) as Kamila Licwinko (nee Stepaniuk) achieved two Polish indoor records with 197 in first and 200 in third. Second Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch with 197 PB and third a tie for surprise Nadezhda Dusanova of Uzbekistan with 194 and Emma Green Tregaro also 194 (passed 197). Fifth again a tie for Ruth Beitia 194 (she tried once 197 and twice two meters) and Irina Gordeyeva also 194. Seventh Airine Palsyte and 8th Anna Iljustsenko both 191.
