SOPOT News (Just five days to go!), from EME NEWS

IAAF World Indoor Championships will visit Sopot, Poland this coming weekend, March 7-9, 2014. Watch for some historical info on Sopot and the area. Sopot and Gdansk are an industrial area of about one million people, located near the North Sea. The area has been part of Poland, Germany and Russia at various times in its history. RunBlogRun and the Shoe Addicts will share our visit to the area with you, our readers. We leave for Sopot on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 and return March 11, 2014. Watch for our updates and great pieces from our team of writers, photographers and you, our readers. 

The following updates are from Alfonz Juck, long time editor of EME News, meet director at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, and one of the true keen observers of the sport. If you are following EME NEWS on twitter, you are missing out! 

SOPOT NEWS

 

 

SOPOT (POL): From individual gold medalists from last years World Championships in Moscow 8 athletes will compete. IAAF lists them in alphabetical order: Valerie Adams, Mohammed Aman, Abeba Aregawi, Ashton Eaton, Hanna Melnychenko, Aleksandr Menkov, Christine Ohuruogu and David Storl.

 

ALGIERS (ALG): No Algerian athletes will be present in Sopot for the World Indoors, informs elwatan.com. In 2012, Algeria had two representatives. Their last World Indoor medal was won by Noureddine Morceli in 1991.

 

APELDOORN (NED): Dutch hurdler Gregory Sedoc has informed via Twitter that he has got the all clear to be able to compete in Sopot after injuring his ankle at the Dutch Indoors. The 32 year old injured his ankle in coming second to Koen de Smet in Apeldoorn, however scans performed on Sedoc showed no abnormalities.

 

MEXICO CITY (MEX): World long jump bronze medallist Luis Rivera will be Mexico’s only representative in Poland. Mexico has won two bronze medals at the World Indoors; Ernesto Canto in the 5000mW in 1987 and Alejandro Cardenas in the 400m in 1999.

 

MANAMA (BRN): Only two women will compete for Bahrain. Mimi Belete in the 1500 m and star runner Maryam Jamal in the 3000 m. The new male incoming like Albert Rop are not yet eligible.

 

NEW DELHI (IND): The only representative of India will be shot putter Om Prakash Singh, the only Asian Indoor champion 2014 from India.

 

ALMATY (KAZ): Kazakhstan sends also only one athlete, triple jumper Roman Valiyev. Surprisingly no women is entered.

 

DUSANBE (UZB): Both top high jumpers will represent this country with high quality season bests. Svetlana Radzivil has 196 and Nadiya Dusanova 194.

 

REYKJAVIK (ISL): Two 800 m runners will compete for Iceland. Mainly the European Rising Star 2013 and World Youth Champion Anita Hinriksdottir. On the men side national champion Kristinn Thor Kristinsson.
