The BAA road miles have been a big hit since they were started here. This year, the races were held on Saturday, instead of Easter Sunday.
This year was no exception. The three-lap course in the center of Boston, gives the fans huge screens to watch the race unfold, fine announcing by Toni Reavis and Larry Rawson, and four fantastic races gave fans lots to enjoy.
The high school races were both fun and close, fans love competition and close races. Toni Reavis and Larry Rawson kept fans informed on each athlete, how the races were developing and got the fans excited.
The elite races were both exciting. Nick Willis, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist controlled the race from the first lap. Willis final lap was about controlling the race, and then, taking a strong run to the finish, holding off the rest of the field. 2012 Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano ran from fifth to third over the last hundred meters.
In the women’s race, Morgan Uceny, who has has several years of rough competition, won a race in exciting fashion. Uceny, when fit, is a master tactician, with a great final kick. Uceny stayed near the front, and took off to the lead with a lap to go, and then, increased her lead over the last two hundred meters, winning going away.
Afterwards, Morgan Uceny told me, ” I am training very well. Last year, I just did not feel well, and could not respond. My training is going well, and I am feeling great. Today was the beginning of my comeback. ”
The crowds on Boylston street were huge on Saturday. People were taking pictures of the finish line, they were visiting Marathon Sports , and the miles kept the people in the center of Boston after eight thousand ran the BAA 5k earlier in the morning.
Saturday before the Marathon is full of meetings with footwear companies, media meetings with elite athletes. I had fourteen meetings scheduled over the ten hour day. Pretty typical for the day.
My walk in Boston Commons on Saturday evening was not as solitary as in past nights. Everyone in Boston must have had the same idea. The cool weather of Saturday night, I noted, would be perfect for Monday morning.
But for now, it is off to a few parties to close off the Saturday evening in Boston.
