Mondo Duplantis made eight attempts and had six clearances.

Mondo opened at 5.70 meters on his first attempt. He then passed at 5.70m and

took two attempts to clear 5.87m, along with Chris Nilsen, Tokyo silver medalist, and Belgrade

bronze medalist.

Ernest Obiena of the Philippines had cleared 5.87m on his first attempt and put pressure on

Mondo. In fact, seven had cleared 5.87m, including Renaud Lavillenie, London 2012 champ, former.

WR holder, Thiago Braz, Rio champion and

Tokyo bronze medalist, and Germans Oleg Zernikel and Bo Kande Baehre.

All but Nilsen, Obiena and Duplantis went out at 5.94m. Mondo was picking up steam.

The young Swede cleared 5.94 m on his first attempt, as did the American Nilsen, and

Obiena, the Philippine record holder, took two attempts.

Six meters was the moment of truth.

Mondo Duplantis cleared 6.00 meters on his first attempt. Chris Nilsen missed his 3 attempts and

took silver based on his 5.94m clearance on the first attempt. Ernest Obiena took the bronze

after missing 6.00 meters on all 3 attempts but clearing 5.94 on his second attempt, a Philippine

NR.

Mondo then cleared 6.06 meters, breaking the Champs record, set in Edmonton, Canada, of 6.05 meters.

Mondo then made two attempts at 6.21 meters. On his first attempt, he missed, and on his second, he

cleared it with room to spare.

The following audio is Larry Eder sharing the roar as Mondo broke the WR of 6.20m with his

WR (pending) of 6.21m.

What follows is the NBC Sports video of the new world record!

The young Swede is the finest pole vaulter in the world and a superstar of global sports!
