Birmingham 2022 Diary, Twelve highlights from the final day of athletics (in random order)

This is a fun column by Stuart Weir, who watched seven days of Commonwealth Games after ten days of World Championships athletics and then Diamond League meetings. 

Twelve highlights of the final day (in random order)

1. Arshad Adeem won the Javelin throw with 90.18m from Anderson Peters.  We think this was Pakistan’s first ever Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal. Kelsey-Lee Barbour won the women’s.
2. Tobi Amusan wins 100m hurdles in  12.30 Championship record-see see separate post.
3. Eldhose Paul won the men’s triple jump by 1cm from AA Narangolintevid in an Indian 1-2.
4. Laura Muir was imperious in winning the 1500 – see separate post.
5. Eilish McColgan and two Kenyans dominated the 5K – see separate post
6. Sada Williams (no surprise) and Muzala Amukonga (enormous surprise) won the 400m races.
7. Ese Brume had already won the long jump with 6.99m before jumping 7 meters with her final attempt.
8. Wycliffe Kinyamal won the men’s 800 in 1:47.52
9. The 10K racewalks were won by Evan Dunfee of Canada and Jemima Montag (Australia).
10. The men’s sprint relay was won by England. The women’s by Nigeria.

    

11. England finished first in the women’s 4 by 400 relay, 1/100^th of a second ahead of Canada. But England was then disqualified for a lane infringement, meaning that Canada won and Scotland got an unexpected medal.
12. Jereem Richards anchored Trinidad to a great men’s 4 by 400 relay win.
