On day seven of the Commonwealth games Athletics schedule, great things happened. Jo Pavey showed supreme guts and won a medal for a mother of two, just over 40 with a gutty last kilometer in the 5,000 meters. Julius Yego upset the Olympic champion as a Kenyan javelin thrower won the javelin!

And, to the delight of 44,000 athletics fans, England challenged Jamaica for three legs in the 4×100 meters, until Usain Bolt got moving.

Once the Bolt moved, the Jamaican team moved into first with a fine World Leading 37.58!

GLASGOW (GBR, Aug 2): On the final day of athletics at the Commonwealth Games, competitors competed in very wet conditions, with the field events delayed due to the conditions. A group of 5 hit the bell in the women’s 5000m final, a Kenyan 1-2-3 looked likely, but Jo Pavey of England fought hard for bronze in 15:08.96. Mercy Cherono (15:07.21) was a comfortable winner ahead of Janet Kisa (15:08.90). Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi made what looked to be the decisive move in the men’s 1500m final, but his compatriot James Magut finished fast to take gold in 3:39.31. Kwemoi was next in 3:39.53 while Nick Willis finished fastest of all, for bronze in 3:39.60. South Africa’s Johan Cronje was 4th (3:39.65), while Australia’s Jeff Riseley (3:40.27) was 5th, as in the 800m. 19 year old Matthew Hudson Smith clocked 44.7 to bring the English 4x400m team home for gold in 3:00.46, just edging Bahamas (3:00.51). Trinidad & Tobago were 3rd in 3:01.51 and Jamaica 4th in 3:02.17. Jamaica finished on top in the women’s race with a games record of 3:23.82. Nigeria (3:24.71) won silver and England (3:27.24) bronze. Jamaica won both games closing 4x100m finals in games records, 2013 IAAF Athletes of the Year, Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce and Usain Bolt were both on anchor. The women’s team ran 41.83 world lead to beat Nigeria (42.92) and England (43.10). The men clocked 37.58, with England (38.02) and Trinidad & Tobago (38.10) the other medallists. South African ran a NR of 38.35 for 4th. Kenya’s Julius Yego threw 83.87 in the 3rd round for javelin gold, putting Kenya on top of the medal table. Trinidad & Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott (82.67) won silver and Australia’s Hamish Peacock (81.75) bronze. South Africa’s Khotso Mokoena won the men’s triple jump with 17.20 (-0.1). Tosin Oke of Nigeria was 2nd (16.84, 0.0) and India’s Arpinder Singh 3rd (16.63, 1.4). Phillips Idowu fouled 5 times, his one jump was 16.45 (0.0) which put him 5th. Australia’s Alana Boyd took the women’s pole vault title with 450 in very tricky wet conditions. Sally Peake of Wales cleared 425 for silver and it was joint bronze for Alysha Newman of Canada and Sally Scott of England who both cleared 380.
