ZURICH NEWS

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): British javelin record-holder Goldie Sayers has been named as Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s captain for the European Championships, report Athletics Weekly. The 32 year old has returned to competition this year after 18 months out due to injury. She said that “getting back into the GB vest alone has been incredible, “to say captaincy is an added bonus is a massive understatement.”

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): There have been several withdrawals from the British team for the European Championships; Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thomson, who had been due to compete in the long jump has not recovered enough from a foot injury; European junior 1500m champion Jake Wightman has ended his season due to hamstring problems, hurdler Meghan Beesley is out due to an injury, long jumper Shara Proctor has a thigh injury and Phillips Idowu has withdrawn “with a view to getting back into training and rediscovering his best form”, according to UKA. Seb Rodger has also replaced Dai Greene in the men’s 400mH as Greene failed to meet the qualifying standard.

AMSTERDAM (NED): Churandy Martina says that he is going for gold in Zurich now that he has gotten over the groin problems that had been troubling him, report ad.nl. The 30 year old has been suffering with groin pain since 2012, but a German doctor was able to diagnose the problem this year. Martina explains, “It’s a chronic problem in the adhesion of the groin to the bone. Sometimes I feel nothing and sometimes I cannot run from the pain. I’m doing specific exercises and get massages. That helps.” He also revealed that he is aiming to compete at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, adding that the fast times that Kim Collins is running at the age of 38 gives him confidence that he can compete in 2 more Olympics.

BRUSSELS (BEL): Crelan Bank, the sponsors of the Borlée family and the Belgian 4x400m squad, have written a letter to the Belgian athletics federation to complain about the exclusion of Dylan Borlée from the squad for the European Championships, report rtbf.be. The bank called Dylan’s exclusion “culpable negligence,” adding that Dylan’s inclusion on the team would mean that Belgium’s chances of success would rise dramatically.

ZURICH (SUI): Hammer thrower Martin Bissinger is the only athlete of the 52 strong Swiss squad for Zurich that did not achieve the qualification standard, report rts.ch. Bissinger’s best throw is 7 metres below the limit, but Swiss selectors say that he earned his spot on the team by winning in Luzern.

ZAGREB (CRO): Croatia selected 23 athletes for European Championships (11 men and 12 women), including both 4×400 m relays.  But top medal hopes are discus thrower Sandra Perkovic and high jumper Blanka Vlasic. Also in the team recent World junior javelin medalist Sandra Kolak.

KYIV (UKR): Javelin London Olympic silver medallist Oleksandr Pyatnytsya announced his modest goal for European championships in Zurich. “After knee surgery and elbow injury I take all this season as time for recovery and preparation for next two years. Now I’m doing well but still feel discomfort and little pain during practices. In spite of that, I aim to achieve the final in Zurich. It should be my first step to come back to previous level,” said 29-year-old Ukrainian to X-Sport TV-channel.
