EME NEWS (AUG 12, 2014) PART ONE

QUOTE OF THE SESSION

„There is a big ambition inside me. I am not surprised at all about this heat. I am in a great shape and I came here to run beautiful times. „La guerre commence.” The war starts now. Runnning this time is very reassuring for me. I will sleep very well tonight,” Myriam Soumare after her fast 100 m.

RESULT OF THE SESSION

11.03 equaled European lead by Myriam Soumare in the women 100 m heats, second fastest ever 100 m women first round time at Eurochamps and with negative wind 0.4. Series of national records on the track confirmed the quality of the surface (for example Swiss women 100 m, Estonian 400 m men, Portugal 400 m men).

SURPRISE OF THE SESSION

Ukrainian national record holder and 2nd in the World list 2014 Hanna Hatsko out in javelin women qualification with 53.81 and two fouls.

FAVORITES FALLS

Czech Euroindoor medalist Ladislav Prasil in shot qualification, Swiss record holder Nicola Buchler in women pole vault, several top names from slower heat one in women 1500 m (Muir, Mischchenko, Koster) from second Gega and Olympic medalist Bulut. Italian Daniele Greco, Euroindoor winner and Olympic finalist did not compete at the end of the day in triple qualification due to achilles tendon injury in the warm-up.

STATS (by Ken Nakamura)

In the men’s shot qualification, Germany’s David Storl recorded 20.76, the second longest first round mark ever at these championships. GDR’s Ulf Timmerman threw 21.13 in 1986, two years before winning Olympic gold. Myriam Soumare’s heat time of 11.03 is also the second best first round mark at a European Championships. Zhanna Pintusevich-Block ran 11.01 in 1994, her fastest time of that championships. Russia’s Denis Kudryavtsev clocked 49.05 in the men’s 400mH heats to tie the 2nd fastest first round mark ever at the Europeans. Portugal’s Carlos Silva ran 49.00 in the round 1 in 1998, and then finished 4th in the final. 13 athletes recorded 445 in the women’s pole vault, tying the highest qualifying mark ever. Defending champion Jirina Svobodová of the Czech Republic also recorded 445 in 2012, when she was the only athlete over that height. Russia’s Maksim Dyldin ran 45.45 to record the 4th fastest men’s 400m first round mark at a Europeans. Spain’s David Canal has the fastest first round mark of 45.20 from 1998, and finished 7th in the final.
