In wet conditions 240 jumper Aleksey Dmitrik was out with 210 and nearly injured himself. In the 800 m heats out World indoor medalist Angelika Cichocka of Poland. In hammer qualification out Olympic winner 2008 Oksana Miankova of Belarus and fall in the 400 m hurdles heats by one of the favorites Hanna Ryzhykova of Ukraine.

Germany’s Arthur Abele clocked 13.55 in the decathlon, setting a new championship record. Germany’s Rico Freimuth and Ukraine’s Oleksiy Kasyanov also ducked under the previous best of 13.96 which was set by Finland’s Eduard Hämäläinen in 1998 on his way to silver. In the women’s hammer qualification, Anita Wlodarczyk threw 75.73, the longest ever recorded in the first round. It is also the third longest throw ever at a European Championships. Spain’s Miguel Angel Lopez became the first European u23 20kmW champion to also claim the senior crown. It was the first time that Russia won more than one medal in the men’s 20kmW, although the URS did it twice. Lopez’s 1 second win is the smallest winning margin in championships history. The 0 sec differential between 3rd and 4th tied the smallest margin between those places at a Europeans; the difference was also 0 in 2002. Martina HraÅ¡nová of Slovakia threw 73.05, which is the 2nd best mark seen in the qualification round at a Europeans.

ZURICH (SUI): European 100m leader Jimmy Vicaut is out of the European Championships with a hamstring injury. The 22 year old from France felt a pain in his hamstring between 60m and 80m in his 100m heat, where he clocked 10.06. The pain site was just above where he was injured earlier in the season. We underwent an ultrasound scan on Tuesday which showed no recurrence of the muscle tear or bleeding, but a contracture of the scarred area of the previous injury. He made the decision not to compete today.
ZURICH (SUI): Special guest in Zurich on Wednesday was fastest man on earth Usain Bolt. He tweeted on his twitter: „In Zurich today doing some PR work for @puma, plan to visit the #EuropeanAthletics Championships this evening.” His next race will be in Rio de Janeiro at Copacabana beach on Sunday in the 100 m against US Wallace Spearmon, Briton Mark Lewis-Francis and Brazilian sprinter who will qualify from heats. Then he will run in Warszawa on August 23 at 5th Kamila Skolimowska Memorial also a 100 m.
ZURICH (SUI): Former European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles champion Andy Turner has announced that he will retire at the end of the season, report the BBC. The 33-year-old has competed in three Olympics and won bronze at the 2011 World Championships.
ZURICH (SUI): British sprinter Dwain Chambers recently sat down with his three children, Phoenix (3), Skye (8) and Rocco (6) to explain to them about his doping past, report the BBC. The 36 year old received a two year ban after testing positive for THG in 2003. He admitted that it was a difficult talk but it helped to get it off his chest. He hopes to be able to compete in front of his children at the 2017 World Championships in London. “That would be a good send-off. Down the road from where I grew up. Whether it’s the 100m, or the relay, that would be the holy-grail for me”
ZURICH (SUI): Russian walking coach Viktor Chegin, who is under investigation by RUSADA in connection with the numerous doping cases involving his athletes, is in Zurich but not as part of the Russian team, report R Sport. Chegin was accompanied by the Russian coaches during the men’s 20kmW. He does not have accreditation but is offering guidance to the Russian team.
ZURICH (SUI): Clemens Prokop, the president of the German athletics federation, has criticized the price of tickets at the European Championships, report handelsblatt. Prokop said that the price was especially high for families.
ZURICH (SUI): Norway’s Sindre Buraas has decided not to compete at the European Championships due to a lack of form, report bt.no. He has been training in St Moritz in an effort to get in shape but is not satisfied with his progression. He feels that in an effort to be the best he took too many risks this season, but he thinks that these will benefit him in the long term. Burass had been set to compete in the 5000m in Zurich.
ZURICH (SUI): Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem has withdrawn from the men’s marathon due to illness, report marca.com. The 32 year old, who has a best of 2:09:28 from 2013, was one of the favourites. He sent a medical certificate to the Spanish athletics federation, informing them of his illness. Spain will have just one man in the marathon, Javi Guerra.
ZURICH (SUI): Very close decision in 20 km walk final. Top four ended within 2 seconds. The difference between third and fourth was 0.224.
ZURICH (SUI): Technique getting better, only one walker was disqualified in the 20 km men race.
