LONDON (GBR): IAAF presidential candidate Sebastian Coe has said that the current doping scandal in athletics is as bad as the well documented cases involving Ben Johnson, Marion Jones and Balco, report BBC. “It has been a ghastly week for athletics” admitted the former middle distance great. “We have to bring this tawdry episode to a close as quickly as we can. I am not afraid of embarrassment. We have to get to the bottom of it,” Coe was quoted as saying.
(Editor’ note: Sebastian Coe has the right attitude. Before it get’s better, this writer believes that it will get much more difficult. The Russian crisis is one thing, the alleged corruption within the family of the current President of the IAAF is another. Even if the President was ignorant of the wrong doings, it is unseemly and is damaging to the sport.
I am at a wonderful celebration of the sport this evening, at the USTFCCCA. The Hall of Fame awards have been given out. Coaches, athletes and families are enjoying a fun evening and a rightful celebration of things that are good with our sport.
I believe that there are many good things in our sport. The doping issues and the level of corruption may have been suspected in the past, but now, they are coming into focus and they must be cleared for the sport to go forward. )
