This is Coffee with Larry for Monday, October 9, 2023.

CWL is our daily news podcast on all things running and all the rabbit holes that your host (moi) can find!

Our topics!

  1. In my 35th visit to the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, I have to say that this one ranks in the best category.
  2. Kelvin Kiptum did more than deliver; his 2:00.35 broke the paradigm.
  3. Sifan Hassan might be the happiest Olympic champion, now ER holder in the Marathon that I have ever seen.
  4. Sifan Hassan has ER from 1,500m to Marathon.
  5. Kelvin Kiptum ran 13:51 in 30-35k, then 14:01 in his final 5k! Simply amazing!
  6. Connor Mantz runs 2:07.47, and Clayton Young runs 2:08:00, both PBs, coached by Ed Eyestone.
  7. Galen Rupp is back, 2:08.48 after a dnf last year in NYC, worked on his mechanics.
  8. Sam Chelanga ran 2:08.50 in his PB!
  9. Sifan Hassan and Ruth Chepn’getich had a true battle, and Sifan runs 2:13.44 and Ruth runs 2:15.37!
  10. Sifan Hassan told herself “no more marathons”, between 35-40k, but she laughed about it afterward.
  11. Sifan Hassan could do the Marathon, 10,000m and 5,000m in Paris to emulate Emil Zatopek, but will she?
  12. Where else has one athlete won a WC medal at 1,500m and then won two major marathons in one year?
  13. Even with a side stitch for 8 miles, Emily Sisson goes 2:22.09, damn.
  14. Molly Seidel is back and was so happy with her 2:23.07 PB to watch our interview!
  15. Brit Rose Harvey goes 2:23.21, a three-minute plus PB for Rose!
  16. Sara Vaughn, mom of 4, runs a huge PB of 2:23.24, third American and 10th overall!
  17. 48,500 finished the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon as of 5 P.M. Central time, October 8, 2023.
  18. Near perfect weather for a marathon, perhaps best since the 1990s!
  19. See you tomorrow on Coffee with Larry!
  20. Special thanks to Carey Pinkowski, Mike Niski and Alex Sawyer for their kindness and thoughtfulness.
  21. My first visit to Chicago since 2018. My health is back, and it was great seeing my friends.
  22. Des Linden breaks eight-year-old US Masters AR in the marathon (held by Deena Kastor) in 2:27.35!
