Coffee with Larry, Today is Veterans’ Day, Some thoughts on Harrison Dillard, 100m, 110m gold, 92nd Infantry Division

Harrison Dillard served in famed 92nd Infantry, aka Buffalo Soldiers in 1943. In London 1948, won 100m and 4x100m. In 1952, Harrison won 110m gold and 4x100m hurdles. Photo by Wikipedia Commons.

This is my daily chat with #RunBlogRun viewers and track fans on all things track & field!

This is Coffee with Larry for Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Coffee with Larry is our near daily podcst from
RunBlogRun.

Our topics:

1. This is Veterans Day, established in 1918, as the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour that WW1 ended (1918). Each year, we honor the Veterans among us who have fought to preserve our freedoms.
2. Many great athletes among our veterans. Harrison Dillard, 110m hurdles, Charles Paddock, 100m /200m, Willie Davenport, 110m hurdles, Louis Zamperini, 5000m,

Mal Whitfield won gold at 800m and 4x400m in London in 1948. In WW@, he was a tail gunner for the Tuskegee Airmen, photo by Wikipedia Commons.

3. Those who live in Doha, Qatar, can do a memorial run for John Nuttall, who passed away earlier this week, at 5 pm
at 5-6 Park on Sunday, Nov 12.

Memorial note for John Nuttall from Liz McCoglan Nuttall.

4. Went to Aspire Academy on several of my visits to Doha DL each May, getting to see John Nuttall.
5. Good luck to the Los Altos High team and Bellarmine teams at CCS today at Crystal Springs.
6. NCAA regionals yesterday and today will be watching to see who will go to NCAA Champs next weekend.

7. Met Harrison Dillard in 2012 at the IAAF Centenary in Barcelona. It was amazing. To see Harrison with Renaldo Nehemiah, Aries Merritt, and I believe Allen Johnson was pretty extraordinary. I am trying to find pictures! Harrison carried himself with so much dignity. The only man to win the 100m and 110m hurdles died on November 15, 2019, at the time, the oldest Living US Olympian. Harrison served in WW2 with the 92nd Infantry, the ONLY All African American division on the front lines. Harrison fought in Italy, a total shit show, as part of the Fifth Army. I recall Harrison dressed to the “nines” in a great suit in Barcelona. What an amazing man!

8. One final thought today. It breaks my heart that I have to write about confusion and conflict with the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. The time (early)should have been decided prior to the announcement. The entire process makes USATF and USOPC look less than professional to the global marketing world, and as both are fighting for each and every dollar out there with NBA, MLB, and MLS, this kind of situation, which happens nearly each and every time, has to be corrected. Hopefully, now that the USATF Board has signed Max Siegel to five more years, they can now go on and get things like this done, so journalists can write about the fun stuff coming in Orlando.

See you again Monday, November 13, 2023, on
