Six  Deep Thoughts on Day 1 of the Glasgow World Indoor Champs

1. One of the Champs’ most exciting events is Friday night, the Men’s 60 meters. Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Ackeem Blake look ready to roll after the first session today.

2. The Women’s shot put showed that there are always surprises in sports! Sarah Mitton of Canada overcame the huge 20.19m PB by Germany’s Yemisi OgunLeye, who threw a 60-centimeter PB to open the competition! Giving Canada its first gold in women’s shot put, Sarah Mitton improved to 20.22m, going 6-6 in indoor season. Outdoor world champ, 2022 silver indoor medalist Chase Jackson finished in bronze in 19.67m. Many had thought Chase would be the winner. Surprises abound in champs.

3. The Scottish crowd will be entertained by Jemme Reekie at 800m, Laura Muir at 3,000 meters, and Josh Kerr at 3,0000m. Jemma Reekie ran her heat in the 800m this morning with focus and control. The home crowd loved Jemma’s running, and Jemma obviously took energy from the fan support!

4. The Men’s shot put. Ryan Crouser is in a league all of his own. His 22.80m throw at the US Champs was his only competition of the season and he goes tonight for his first indoor World gold. Tom Walsh is in this again, having won an Olympic bronze, World Champs indoor twice, and World Champs outdoor once. Tomas Stanek is always one who could surprise as well.

5. Women’s pentathlon, some new, some veterans. No Katerina Johnson Thompson, No Nafi Thiam and No Anna Hall. But some fine competitors, with Noora Vidts and Cherri Hawkins among the five event warriors. All ends with the 800m, their fifth event tonight!

6. Oh, and some amazing 400m and 1,500m heats! Do not miss 2 PM Eastern on Peacock today, Friday, March 1, 2024!
