Gebrhiwot unexpectedly attacked 5000 m WR, and Jakob made a great end of the meet

OSLO (NOR, May 30): Another great edition of Bislett Games with a sell-out crowd and that despite some rain and some cold weather. Unexpected nearly WR in men´s 5000 m, unexpected ER in men 400 m, expected Jakob triumph at the end. Karsten lost to dos Santos. Meet records also in women 3000 m and men discus. Simbine is nearly WL, and S. Jackson is out of shape as of now. Surprise winner and fast times in women 3000 m. In total, 3 World leads and another 2 World best outdoor marks in 2024.

Short reviews

Men

100 m: Nearly WL in the cold for sprints, Simbine 9.94 (+0.4) over Sani Brown 9.99, Jacobs fourth 10.03 SB. Azu cramped.

Americans in Zurich (August 27-28, 2025)

Weber 91.51 WL/MR, sixth trophy for Lyles, home win for Werro (1:55.91 NR) at Weltklasse Zurich DL Finals!

400 m: Hudson-Smith’s European record of 44.07 makes him the top favorite for Rome. James SB was second in 44.58.

1500 m: The home win by Jakob was the right ending to the meet. He clocked 3:29.74 WL with a winning dive over T. Cheruiyot 3:29.77. Top 12 under 3:34. NR for Italy.

5000 m: Nobody expected Gebrhiwot to come 1.37 close to WR with 12:36.73 NR, WL, MR. 2nd fastest ever. Kejelcha also under 12:40 (12:38.95 PB). In the deepest quality race ever (top 13 sub 13), Kiplimo was third at 12:40.96, fourth Ndikumwenayo at 12:48.10, second best European ever, WR holder Cheptegei 9th but National records for Guatemala, Switzerland, Sweden, and France, and South Africa.

400mH: Dos Santos’s great finish spoiled the Norwegian party, as he beat Warholm 46.63 WL to 46.70 for the second time in his career. Warholm (a little colision at the 10th hurdle) now has 10 sub 47, and Dos Santos has 6 sub 47. Also, Benjamin has 7.

PV: US record holder Lightfoot, as the only one, cleared 582 to win and tried at 590. Five jumpers cleared 572, headed by Karalis (his lifetime best position in DL) and Obiena, who tied for second.

TJ: Budapest winner Zango’s 17.27 in the fourth round was enough, but Triki was attacking in the last round, 17.25.

DT: WR breaker Alekna confirmed his status with 70.91 MR (taken from his father) in 2nd round. Denny for second 67.61 over Stahl 66.80. Alekna did not throw the final 3.

Women

200 m: Brittany Brown from outside lane 22.32 over Ta Lou-Smith 22.37. World champ Jackson is not in full shape, 22.97 as 5th.

400 m: World champ Paulino ruled with 49.30 outdoor WL and missed MR by only 0.07. After Ostrava’s win, Kaczmarek still had enough power to outdoor EL 49.80. Jaeger in 6th 50.81 NR.

800 m: Sekgodiso dominated with 1:58.66 and will be there to challenge the stars in Paris.

3000 m: Surprise winner Griffith 8:24.20 outdoor WL, MR, and Oceanian record. In superb race with top six under 8:30, also Norwegian record 8:27.02 for Grovdal, Finnish record for Blomqvist 8:32.23, all-time U20 top 10 for Aschal 8:33.65, Japanese record for Tanaka 8:34.09.
