This is my daily chat with #RunBlogRun viewers and track fans on all things track & field!

Omius is the official cooling technology partner of RunBlogRun

This is Coffee with Larry for Wednesday, September 25, 2024 (of course I said the wrong date! ).

OMIUS makes hats, visors and head bands with their exclusive cooling pods, that, once moistened, keep you feeling cool.

Our topics:

1. Thinking about some good people who influenced me.

2. Brother Jim Marheinecke, my sophomore cross country coach at DeSmet, who encouraged me to run. Bro Jim, as we called him, was not easy on

us. He demanded that we dedicate ourselves to improving. He passed away on March 12, 2013. He was hugely important in my life.

3. Mr. Rich Grawer, my frosh History teacher, who taught me how to do research. Mr. Grawer lead DeSmet to two state basketball titles, and most of the guys ran cross country as well!

4. Dr. Timothy O’Keefe, professor of History at Santa Clara University who taught me British History, European History and was a kind and thoughtful mentor. He passed away in June 2022.

5. Dr. Istvan Moczy, professor of history at Santa Clara University, who taught me Russian history, German History, and the History of Science. A wonderfully thoughtful professor, with a wicked sense of humor, and a love of Eastern European cigarettes. He passed away in 2021.

6. I have all of the books from Dr. O’Keefe and Dr. Moczy in my home library among the 1000 history volumes.

7. Fr. Steve Privett, S.J., who taught European history at Bellarmine and had me read Guns of August and Proud Tower, by Barbara Tuchmann, one of our finest historians.

8. Thinking about the upcoming ATHLOS Meeting on Thursday,
reading the entire field of the six races!

9. I spoke about Ron Markezich, who was Notre Dame U. 10,000m record holder at 28:44 for nearly two decades (1989). Ron’s daughter, Olivia Markezich has been interviewed on RunBlogRun.

10. I spoke about Ray O’Flaherty, father of the O’Flaherty clan, who passed away in 2014, encouraged me to go to RW in Pennsylvannia in 1985. That decision changed my life.

See you tomorrow!
